THE CONTEST IS NOW CLOSED – THE WINNER WILL BE ANNOUNCED HERE ON 11/4/09!
Today I have some fun news to share with you about Urban Homemaker and in case you didn’t know about the dangers of chlorine in your water, I’ll tell you more about that, too!
You’re probably already familiar with this family owned company, Urban Homemaker, and I feel like I’ve known Marilyn for a long time now. In the early days of this website I would stay up until the wee morning hours taking and editing notes from their phone seminars, and with permission I would post them the next day. It was a mutually beneficial connection because Marilyn would link to them in her e-letters for those who weren’t able to listen in, and then I would get new blog readers. Those notes are listed at this phone seminar post, and it was shortly after that last one on organ meats that her husband, Duane, passed away suddenly. This was a shock and heartbreak to all who “knew” them (even though we’d never met). Since then, Marilyn has shared her grief process in her blog and e-letters. Through this, she taught many lessons about how we can lean on God to help us through the agonizing trials that we will all face at some point in our lives.
The picture on the right is Marilyn’s family a few years ago. The one on the left is with her daughter this past January.
Fast forward almost 18 months, and as Marilyn continues on her own with the family business she and Duane began many years ago, I’m thankful that she has decided to become one of our Real Food Media sponsors!
She’s kicking that off with a great giveaway!
The giveaway is for a Multi-pure Shower Filter, and this is one of those products that I wish I’d known about a few years ago. At the time I didn’t realize that we could just buy a filter for the shower to get rid of the chlorine, and instead we spent hundreds of dollars on a whole-house filter system! Ouch. (Obviously I didn’t research things back then as much as I do now.)
Why worry about the chlorine in your water?
Do you ever wonder why public pools advise you to shower after getting out? Because the pool is loaded with chlorine and other chemicals which bond with (and get absorbed through) your skin and hair. Did you know that more chlorine enters the body through the shower than through drinking water? Read more about the increase in bladder cancer when exposed to chlorine in your water from the Journal of Epidemiology. Chlorine also can make your hair dry and brittle or cause flaky and itchy skin. That and all the other information I found when Googling this topic was scary enough, but common sense alone tells me we don’t need more chemicals in our life.
This Multi-pure Shower Filter will remove the chlorine from your water, and it has a $59.95 value.
HOW TO ENTER:
1.
Once you enter there, you’ll also receive a coupon code to get $59.95 off any Multi-Pure water system.
Note: when you enter through here, you’ll be helping to support the Kitchen Kop blog and I’ll be paid a small amount. Thank you for your help so I can keep blogging!
(That’s good for 1 entry)

Entered right now! Stumbled, and I follow on twitter, facebook, and RSS. I’ll blog about it this afternoon.
I’ve been looking into water filters since I give my toddler ‘detox’ baths in epsom salts, and it seems a little odd to give her some chlorine with them. They still work, but it’s not an ideal setup.

Marilyn! Oh my. I “met” Marilyn years ago through my online friends in homeschooling. She encouraged me to grind my grains. Although we eat fewer grains now than we did back then, the ones we eat are freshly ground!
We have skin problems here that we are still trying to deal with, namely eczema and dishydresis. We’ve installed shower filters and find that really helps. I keep a note on the calendar when it’s time to change the filter cartridge, but I can usually tell without looking by the number of itchies we have. The chlorine here is really strong as well, and I’ll cough and gag through an unfiltered shower.

Hi Kelly,
What an awesome product! As I stated in my blog entry – we’ve had the same Multi-Pure water filter in our kitchen for at least 10 years. We just replace the cartridge annually (as possible).

Hi, Kelly. This is a GREAT prize. I was just blogging about shower filters. I know they are good for removing chlorine, but I think they must help with fluoride as well. Once I figured out that I have fluoroderma (acne cause by fluoride ingestion), I installed a carbon filter on my shower and it really helped. I have a reaction within hours if I shower in unfiltered fluoridated water. It makes sense that the body absorbs a lot of fluoride through the skin, since fluoride is a halogen similar to iodine (and iodine is often applied topically).
I would love to win this prize to pass the filter on to my parents. I subscribe to your blog on Google Reader and I also follow you on twitter and tweeted the giveaway. Thanks!

Hi, Kelly. I blogged about your giveaway today. It’s a timely prize considering Dr. Oz’s episode on the state of our nation’s water supply last week. He warned all moms about bathing their kids in unfiltered tap water unless they are certain the water is safe. He also issued a national water alert, based on a series of recent article in the New York Times. Hopefully all this high-profile attention will help improve the matter.
Here’s a link to my blog post about your giveaway:

Thanks again!
