Rookie Tips From YOU (advice for beginners) – Real Food Wednesday

Cheeseslave & I take turns hosting Real Food Wednesdays, where we hit on various Real Food topics and ask for your input.  The topic today is “advice for beginners“.  Most of us remember what it was like when we were just starting to eat a better diet.  (Read my “food conversion” story.)  There can be many emotions involved.

Here are some feelings I had at the time (& still have now and then):

  • Overwhelmed!  So much new information, and a lot of it I had never heard before.  (Where do I start?!)
  • Frustrated – do I believe this or that?
  • Satisfied & thankful – when I began making my family delicious nutrient-dense meals, it felt great knowing I was learning how to nourish them well!
  • Challenged:
  1. Where do I find all this healthier food?
  2. Can we afford it?
  3. Will I have time to make more nutritious meals at home?

I’m still learning and messing up…

These days I really enjoy playing around with recipes trying to make them healthier and/or easier, and if you’ve been at it a while, you may be feeling more confident in the kitchen now, too.  However, some of you may also feel how I still do at times:  like there’s always more to learn, and plenty of trial and error to continue muddling through.  As a matter of fact, just a few days ago I ruined some beef fat that I was attempting to render for my first time…I wonder how much I paid for those hunks of fat?  It’s probably better that I don’t know…  The point is, we can ALL benefit from hearing your advice, and I hope you’ll jump into the conversation!

So what would be your advice to those who are just starting to eat a more nutritious diet, or who are new to the Weston Price/Nourishing Traditions way of eating?

  • What tips, ideas or advice helped or hindered you along the way?
  • What has overwhelmed you in the past, and what helped you get a handle on it?
  • What was the “one” thing you started with?
  • Share about your journey, what prompted you to start eating healthier, etc.

Just a quick tip to help find free pork fat for lard: I would go to the farmers markets all summer and always bought bacon from one vendor. One day I just happened to ask her, what happened to the leaf lard from the pigs she took to the butcher? She said, he just threw it away, but she could ask for it the next time they took a pig in, how much did I want? Sure enough, a couple of weeks later, she had a couple pounds of leaf lard for me, and I stored it in my freezer for a number of months, wrapped up in plastic wrap until I had time to render it down. For FREE! Never hurts to ask! :)

Real food is a great investment.

I just wanted to point out that the stock market is a great investment right now, too. This is one of the best times to buy.

Kelly you are insanely lucky that you can get leaf lard for free.

Our local farmer does not sell lard, sadly. His pigs are too lean he says. We have to buy lard from the Amish in PA.

Okay, I don’t have a blog so here are my Rookie Tips. I still consider myself a real Rookie, because there are some many areas that I still need to improve upon.
1. Pick a couple small areas to concentrate on. If you are really a rookie, snack food and dairy are great places to start.
2. You must plan ahead or you will feel overwhelmed every day.
3. If you don’t already bake, start. Make small changes in recipes your
family already likes.
4. Shop the outer area of the stores. And read labels.
5. I try not to be overy zealous talking about the changes with my family (2 teenage boys and an 11 daughter + hubby).
6. Remember the first few weeks will be hard even with making small changes.
I realize some of these are repeats . . .

That’s very sweet of you to say. I have tried really hard this year to get back to basics and cook most things from scratch. Jen’s comment about thinking of your grocery/ food budget as an investment has really resinated with me the last few days. It sure is easier to pay an extra few $$ on an organic item if you think of it that way!

I thought of three other things while I was making dinner tonight
1. Don’t beat yourself up for all things you aren’t doing, instead pat yourself on the back for each small change you have made.
2. If you are used to using that cooking spary in a can, a really easy way to stop is keep a small jar with your favorite cooking oil (I use a high quality extra virgin olive oil) in a small jar. Also have a pastry brush. Brush your pan with oil. This also helps to reduce the amount of oil/ calories. In the frig, keep one stick of butter that is only for buttering casserole or baking dishes. I also save all my butter wrappers in a bag in the freezer. When I need to butter a baking sheeting, I just grab one and go.
3. Sneak extra nutritious vegetables in things you make for your famiy.
Today I made hamburgers and meatballs, I put in about a cup of mashed beans (that I had made and froze) for 2 lbs. of burger. Noone even tasted a difference.

Hi Jeanne,

Excellent tips!

Good idea on the oil and a brush. I just grab a stick of cold butter. If I only have soft, I get my hands in there and spread it around, then use the excess on my dry hands.

Good sneaking with the burgers!

LOVED reading your advice for beginners – you made so many great points!!

Your comment about butter reminded me of feeling the SAME way – I was in shock at what I read. That’s why I jabber on about butter being healthy so much here on the blog!

Wow, for only getting 13 links, we’ve all sure covered some good ground between those and the comments – beginners should have a solid feel for how to get moving on eating Real Food. :)
