Homemade Chocolate Syrup (Great in Raw Milk!)

choc syrup

For years we regularly had Hershey’s Syrup in our fridge.  ICK!  Can you say High Fructose Corn Syrup?

After my ‘food conversion’ I’d buy the organic chocolate syrup from the health food store, and the kids would occasionally have that in their raw milk.

Then we ran out and I didn’t want to buy anymore (it’s expensive), but after a while the kids kept asking and bugging, blah blah blah, you know how that is, so I decided to save some money and make my own.  That way I know the kind of sugar that goes in it and how much.

First, you already know that you shouldn’t be eating sweets much, right?  As rare as possible actually.  But as you know, we still indulge now and then around here, but try to do so in ways that are at least a little better than we used to.

Here’s what I came up with, and the kids love it…

  • 1/2 c. organic cocoa powder
  • 2/3 c. Rapadura (An unrefined sugar, you could also use palm or coconut sugar.)
  • 1 c. water
  • 1/2 t. sea salt
  • 1 t. vanilla
  • 3 T. butter

Mix everything together in a small saucepan and keep whisking on medium heat as the sugar dissolves and it gets smooth.  This comes out thin, and you could add 2 t. of arrowroot flour to thicken a little, but then it doesn’t stir into the milk as easily.  Makes 2 cups.  Store covered in the fridge.  Use 1 or 2 teaspoons per cup of milk.

Similar recipe:  Homemade hot cocoa.

Note:  Sarah uses a combination of carob powder with chocolate extract to avoid the caffeine in the cocoa powder, but I haven’t tried it.

Instead of water use leftover cold coffee and you have an awesome mocha flavour

Wow, thanks for posting! My dad made a chocolate syrup when I was a child that you put on a buttered biscuit! It is delicious and very similar to this recipe. My guys will love this but i’m not sure I want them drinking up all of my costly milk within a couple of days. lol
Will definitely make this soon. How long will it last in the fridge?
I’m finally grain free for about 4 days so no more southern biscuits. :(

I’ve been making a very similar recipe for years with honey. You can also use carob powder instead of the cocoa. It’s the way we have hot chocolate around here!! And now it’s even better with the grass fed raw milk I’ve been buying for almost a year now…..don’t even bother to make it hot. Just stir in the syrup into cold milk and drink up.
This syrup is also wonderful drizzled over homemade ice cream :D !

I did something similar to this last week when my family wanted milkshakes. We would have used Hershey’s syrup to make them chocolate, but I didn’t have any so I made up something like this on the stove top. It worked great. but I didn’t copy down the measurements. I’ll definitely be making this to keep around!

When we make shakes we just add cocoa and vanilla — no need to make a sauce, and no extra sweetener!

Thank you so much. I’m going to try adding that to my lattes for a delicious mocha.

I buy chocolate stevia – you only need 5 drops (or less – it’s so sweet!) in a big glass of milk to get that chocolate flavor without sugar. :)

My husband will be so happy – he loves Hershey’s chocolate syrup, and I never buy it for him. I’ve got all the ingredients for this, so I’ll be making it tomorrow! Thanks :)

Count me in. I like the idea of using coffee, but for me I’ll try teecino. I’ve been wondering where to get chocolate extract. I hate to order it online.

Whenever our raw milk starts to sour my kids won’t drink it, so I make some chocolate syrup ( I use palm sugar but otherwise my recipe is the same) and add it to the rest of of the gallon of milk…so instead of turning their noses up, they gulp it down thinking they lucked out on a special treat. I have been known to whisk in a raw yolk or two as well since my kids refuse to eat eggs.

Isn’t it hard to keep the giggles in when you know you got something past them like that?! :)

I add in about 1/4 – 1/2 tsp of blackstrap molasses and it adds a nice malty flavor that my husband really loves.

I was just looking for a healthy version of chocolate syrup and was so thrilled to find yours! I love to make yogurt sundaes with my boys. We usually top with homemade pineapple sauce and strawberry sauce, but were talking about how awesome it would be to make our own chocolate syrup too. Incase you’ve never tried a yogurt sundae, here is the recipe – it’s SO GOOD: Place half of a banana in a bowl and top with a few heaping dollops of whole milk yogurt. Top with homemade pineapple sauce, strawberry sauce or your yummy chocolate syrup. Sprinkle with your favorite chopped crispy nuts and a REAL cherry on top, if you’d like. The homemade fruit sauces are just fresh fruit pureed in my Vitamix with some maple syrup to sweeten to taste. Mmmm. Okay, time to go make your chocolate syrup and try it out on a yogurt sundae! Blessings, Kelly
