Organic Barbecue Sauce Recipe

February 26, 2008 · 1 comment

Today I wanted an organic barbecue sauce for chicken and even though we all love Sweet Baby Rays, I’m trying not to use it, since it has high fructose corn syrup (heart-killer ingredient), just like all store-bought sauces do. We’ve tried the Annie’s organic barbecue sauce and didn’t like it. So I made up my own with help from my friend, Nancy, who was here at the time.

This is what we came up with:

  • About 1/4 c. brown sugar – I’m not sure why I had a brain blip and didn’t just use honey or maple syrup! Next time I’ll use one of those for sure.
  • Juice from 2 organic lemons
  • 2 T. raw apple cider vinegar
  • 1 24 oz. bottle of organic ketchup
  • 2 T. mustard
  • 1/2 t. onion powder
  • 3 T. Tamari (fermented soy sauce)
  • Sea salt
  • 1/2 t. paprika

This makes a lot of sauce, you may want to halve the recipe. Mix it up well, do lots of taste testing and play around with it until you like it. We all agreed that while it’s still not as dreamy as Sweet Baby Rays, it was still pretty good and definitely better than the Annie’s organic barbecue sauce.

If any of you have suggestions for how to make this recipe better, please leave a comment below!
