My 19-year-old niece came over the other day because she wanted me to show her how to make bread with freshly ground flour, and it was a blast because she obviously gets it. She told me how difficult it can be watching her friends eat junk, and how when she says something about it they think she's crazy. SO I had her read my post, Life Changes and 5 Ways They're All the Same, because in there I talk about how it's normal to be attacked when you make positive changes.
Anyone else go through that with your friends and family?
We went to the grocery store so I could show her around (I was in my glory I tell ya!) and saw something there that really bothered me… In the soup aisle we were talking about how pathetic all of the broths and soups are and this guy walked up. He had two kids with him and when he grabbed a few cans of this, I picked one up to look:
The label was shocking, worse than I expected:
MSG, sugar (in broth?!), all those preservatives, and soybean oil, one of the worst of the nasty vegetable oils. The label is an absolute train wreck! That poor Dad was at the store just grabbing some broth, probably to make some ‘homemade' soup, and had NO idea what he threw into his cart. I'm sure he also had no idea that the simple real food version is a superfood! None of the nasty stuff listed above, but loaded with gelatin for healthy joints and a healthy immune system, and life-giving minerals, too. Does that make anyone else really sad, how so many just don't know?
We made my soaked homemade bread recipe, which turned out great except for a couple little things…
First, we made the mistake of setting the bread loaves to rise and then leaving for too long on errands and they fell, DANGIT. At least they didn't fall as bad as this time:
Then I realized that I'd forgotten to make a note in my recipe NOT to grease the pans with coconut oil, because for some STUPID reason, it doesn't work well for that and my bread sticks terribly. We had to peel off the top so I could get a knife around the edge to get it out. DOUBLE DANGIT! At least it tasted really good.
It's not easy being me sometimes, lol.
I'm so thankful I've got my sourdough figured out now, it's so easy!
Stay tuned for my latest accomplishment: I've figured out how to make a tasty sourdough boule!

Kelly, thank you so much for linking to my post on what a Naturopathic Doctor’s Family Eats in One Week. I truly appreciate it!

I looked up the ingredients on the unreal candy. Soy lecithin, whey protein isolate, and agave. WAPF does not think agave is a good sugar. They had an article about it, couldn’t find it on their website.

Yep, I agree they’re not perfect, my WOW are they ever a far cry from the other junk at the store!

We use Samaritan because friends recommended it. We now have several friends who use it. I don’t know all the guidelines of the other 2, but Samaritan works for us. We especially like that maternity is always covered!

We use CHM because they were the best price.

The point of Christian health care sharing is supporting each other in times of need based on biblical principles, which is why it’s allowed the religious exception and allowed to only accept people of Christian faith… I’m not trying to make a faith based argument, but if a bunch of secular people want to get together and try to form the same thing then they should go for it, but the way that these MINISTRIES are set up is for the Christian community based on biblical principles. We’ve been with Samaritan Ministries for 1 1/2 years now.

I wonder if there ARE secular/atheist or Muslim, or ??? ones.

It would be great if they included people of all faiths or no faiths.

I looked into these programs. They would not allow non Christians to join, at least the ones I looked into, so I guess they are exclusive. I didn’t look into Medi-Share though.

Sorting through. Are there any others besides those 3?

We use Christian Healthcare Ministries (CHM)…we are actually in the middle of having expenses shared…it has been incredible! We chose a level without doctors/prescription sharing (we just don’t use them)…I would highly recommend them…I also love how they not only share your bills but work at reducing your bills with the providers and best of all they are PRAYING for you and your healing 🙂

Wow, that sounds so neat.

I had a friend who started out with Medi Share for 2 yrs then switched to Samaritans . He said he experienced a lot of questionable practices with Medishare and found Samaritans to be upright and quality. His referral is why we joined. We’ve been members of Samaritans for 2 years now and they are truly the real deal! You must be a regular Christian church attendee to join because they rely on Pastor’s recommendations and validations at times.

Wow, this post is PACKED with lots of info. Thanks for mention alternatives to regular insurance (Medishare and Samaritian Ministries)! Has anyone used Christian Healthcare Ministries (chministries)? I will loose my insurance at the end of the year and would like to know about all the options available. I would love to switch my whole family of 5 to a homeopath or naturopath but I don’t have all the info I need yet since we all have different insurance plans. In addition I have a family member with type 1 diabetes and the price of insulin would make it difficult to pay out of pocket. Any info would be great!
KitchenKop says
@Rachel, thank you for noticing all the info included today, I was hoping everyone would like all the stuff I found, since it took me a while to compile it. 🙂
I was wondering that too about the 3rd option: Christian Healthcare Ministries.
Hopefully someone jumps in about that! I’ll put it on FB to see if that’ll get people to answer.

We do http://www.samaritanministries.org and it has been a great fit for my family!

Saw that you asked for experiences regarding healthcare sharing programs. We’ve used Samaritan Ministries since the beginning of 2012 and have been really happy with it so far. Our entire hospital birth will be paid in full by next month, and the baby is due in February. We really love the whole thing.

I think it is funny that you don’t grease your pans with coconut oil because that is the only thing I use to grease my pans when making bread!
KitchenKop says
@Tiffany, no kidding?? And yours doesn’t stick? Maybe it’s something with my stainless steel pans then? But butter works great. Weird!

My family and I haven’t been to the dentist in over 5 years, and we are all perfectly fine! I do have to make note of the fact that my mother has undernourished and sensitive teeth, but that is from massive amounts of improperly prepared whole-grains for many years. That is nothing the dentist could have fixed naturally.
I am under the impression that dentists work in conjunction with the USDA, our federal government, and every other non-independent doctor out there to extract unnecessary funds from our accounts, therefore I assume they are not needed for basic maintenance of health granted you provide for your individual body based on its unique needs.

Have used Medi Share since it’s inception (or some other version prior to it)..We home educated 4 sons on a self employed artist income (yes we made home made bread, ate lots of beans/rice & oatmeal !) but never had any problem with our claims that were shared. My husband was diagnosed with a serious clotting disorder that has involved several 50K + hospitalizations with our share being less than $1000 each time! It has been incredibly great!
KP says
We don’t do routine dentist Xrays either. I have also been told by the dental hygienist that she considers it child abuse, or at least child neglect, to not get fluoride treatments.
KitchenKop says
Wow, such ignorance on her part!!! Thankfully our dentist is super cool about that stuff.

I have been using Samaritans ministries for several years now. I’m 62 and don’t use regular doctors, but my homeopath. I agree with what CA said above regarding their newsletter. If you understand this is not insurance in the world sense but rather sharing the burdens of others. You don’t submit claims unless you have more than $300 in a month of bills. So this will not cover routine doctor visits. This is more in line with catastrophic assistance. Several people who have sent notes in the newsletter have mentioned that it has increased their faith as the funds came in even when some months they had to prorate the extra came in as well. They also do not cover pre existing conditions or non christian living activities. It works for me, and I too have not had any claims yet.
CA says
We haved used Samaritan Ministries and have been very happy so far, although we haven’t really claimed anything yet since we so rarely go to the doctor (thank you real food and herbal medicine)! They send out a great newsletter every month, and there are often articles relating to alternative medicine. Recently they did a series on essential oils, and I recall an article on alternative cancer treatments as well as one that referred to WAPF. So glad that my “insurance” is promoting this stuff. It’s worth looking in to.

I always make the scheduler promise that no one will hassle me about x-rays before I go in. I think for insurance purposes it is required every two years or so, but certainly not every 6 months as they wanted. The hygienist tried to tell me she thought it was illegal to skip x-rays. lol! I refused to make another appointment until I could be promised that I wouldn’t be hassled about it unless absolutely vital. Thankfully they abliged. And I agreed to trust them if they felt it was truly necessary. I feel good about that, and just take a high quality whole food vitamin C to counter the radiation.

Hi
I am 61 and take pretty good care of my teeth. I read Ramiel Nagel’s book a few years ago, when it came out. I found that the damage I have done to myself thru poor eating doesnt clear up just because I start eating well. I started Traditional food (WAPF) in 2009. Then I did GAPS starting in Jan 2010. I stayed with that more than a year. and remain on a modified version of it. I am reasonably healthy, no major diseases , tho I suffer from hypothyroidism and arthritic joints, courtesy of my years on sugar, lots of sugar.
My point is, I have found that I must use the dentists skills still to undo the mess I made. I let them clean my teeth once a year and poke around for problems. I had them re-do a crown this month and its good they did. the tooth was cracked underneath but was not infected (yay).
I dont have the rejuvenating power of my body back from my 20’s and 30’s. But I am remaining on the WAPF diet and a modified GAPS to keep on track going forward. Always forward.
