Beyonce Knowles: Are Cleansing Diets Safe?

Are Cleansing Diets Safe

Do You Wonder:  Are Cleansing Diets Safe?

This M-LIVE story was in our local paper about cleansing diets and begins this way, “Some might say Dale Tamminga takes spring cleaning to the extreme.  He doesn't just clean out his closet and call it good. He's a firm believer in cleaning out his “pipes,” too. Yes, those pipes.” It goes on to tell how Beyonce Knowles used the Master Cleanse to lose a quick 20 pounds in 2006 for her role in “Dreamgirls.”

A good friend of mine actually did the “Master Cleanse” recently to clear the toxins from her body, to lose weight, and to generally get cleaned out, and she's a believer now, too. Except I just called her to ask about the weight loss and she said she lost 10# doing it, but has gained 15# back since! So she doesn't necessarily recommend it for long-term weight loss, but she does think it's a great way to clear the toxins from your body.

If you are thinking about trying it, be sure to do your research beforehand, as I'm sure there are right ways and wrong ways to go about it; obviously, you'll need to be careful with something like this. (See the comment section below!)

Personally, I haven't had the pleasure yet, but I'm not against it in the future if there is some good reason for it. However, I happen to believe that unless something gets really out of balance, God made our bodies in a way that they clear out the toxins naturally, and most people don't need to go this route. But if for some reason it becomes necessary, it's nice to know that many others have done it successfully and can let you know what to expect…which doesn't sound all that fun!

If you've tried it, leave a comment below and let us know what you think…don't worry, you can do it anonymously if you want to! 🙂

    Hi Beth,

I love it when people comment, especially someone new! Nice to “meet” you. 🙂

Thanks for the oxypowder link – have you ever tried Kombucha? (See my comment above.) It sounds like you could really benefit from drinking that regularly. I’m waiting to hear back from an “expert” on Kombucha, then after I make it again I’ll get to work on that post.

Also, do you cook with/drink a lot of good bone broth? (Chicken or beef stock.) I’ll bet that would also be really helpful for you -it is healing and soothing to the digestive system.

Lastly (lots of unsolicited advice, sorry!), check out my “favorite books” post – you might like to read the “Maker’s Diet” – he talks about how he healed himself from bowel disease -not diverticulitis, but you might learn a lot that would help you.

    Just my thoughts!

The Master Cleanse sounds a bit extremem and dangerous… A friend spent some time researching cleanses and settled on Oxy Powder. We both did it and it went well for us. We are both chronically ill (late stage lyme disease with lots of meds use history) so we have more than the average share of toxins. I also have diverticulosis so I have to be careful about things such as this. I will do it again as a maintainance in the future (just one day instead of 7). It uses a different approach.

I appreciate your blog so, so much!

    Bryan,

I completely agree with you – the way our bodies work is a gift from God for sure, one that we shouldn’t abuse as much as we do – I’ll try to remember that the next time I’m shoving more sugar into my face!

I should have also noted in the post that I’ve been exploring some more natural (or more gentle I should say) ways to clear toxins from our bodies – one being drinking Kombucha – a traditional Russian beverage. For those of you who have never heard of it, stay tuned, I’ll be doing a whole post on it soon!

    Kelly,

I think you’re exactly right that our bodies will naturally dispose of most toxins as long as we maintain a good diet and avoid excess toxins in our food and environment.

Life is really a miracle that we often take for granted 🙂

    Hi Stef,

Thanks for sharing what happened to you, I think I’ll add another note of caution to the post above!

    Hi Kelly,

I think people have to be careful with the “Master Cleanse.” I wouldn’t advise doing it unless under the supervision of a professional! The reason why I say this is because I had a bad experience with it a couple of years ago. I too wanted to “detox” and the cleanse appealed to me. The first day went okay, but the next morning when I woke up I felt very sick, and the minute I got out of bed my vision started to go black. I stumbled downstairs and told my husband to get me a glass of orange juice. I laid on the floor and the minute the orange juice hit my mouth, my vision started to clear. I was shaken up by it though and realized that for some reason, it wasn’t the right choice for my body. I know others who have done it without such dramatics but I still would never try it again. Just my two cents.
