I’ve been reading articles from this site for months now. It has been an answer to prayer for my family and myself. As a mother and wife, I find myself more and more disturbed at how our world, our bodies, and especially our spiritual selves are being destroyed by forgetting how God meant us to live. I feel like it takes so much of my time just to figure out how my family can lead a healthier life. Thank you so much for the work you’re doing to get the truth out there!!!!
P.S. My husband rues the day you taught me about fermented cod liver oil. I can’t wait to get more tips on how to take it. I have no problem with it, but he is decidedly against even trying it.

I have allergies to yeast and fermented things….is there a way around this with the cod liver oil or other things that need to be fermented to be eaten correctly?

To my knowledge there is nothing “wrong”‘ with unfermented Cod Liver Oil. I asked Radiant Life about their fermented versus “regular” CLO and the reason they have begun to ferment it is that it increases the levels of Vitamin A & D. For some reason the levels of those vitamins have gradually been decreasing in Cod Liver Oil, no matter where it is from. Hope that helps! Joyce

I have been a follower but have not been reading for a while now. I changed so much in my families eating and even stopped taking birth control (which helped rid me of my eczema on my face). However,I have recently been feeling really down about things lately; acne has been flaring up, weight gain, moody changes and sugar cravings. I am looking forward to learning more and applying it. How old are you; could you be going through peri-menopause–you can have symptoms up to 10 years before you actually go through menopause. I had my daughter at 44, weaned her at 45 and my hormones took a complete nosedive; moodiness, weight gain and menstrual migraines. (My Dr. said that this is pretty common.) Also, how long ago did you stop taking BC pills? It can take some time for your hormones to normalize. Again, depending upon your age, your hormones might be fluctuating a lot after having been artificially maintained at certain levels by the BC pills.
Also, have you had your thyroid checked recently? These 2 often go hand in hand. Nourishing Traditions suggests supplementing your diet with3 TBSP of Coconut Oil to support your thyroid if that does turn out to be an issue. I suggest finding a good supportive OBGYN and get your hormone and thyroid levels tested. Many women suffer from “sub-clinical” thryoid problems. (Their thyroid levels are in the low/normal range, but they still are experiencing syptoms.) How you feel is a much better indicator of whether or not you need thyroid medication. Good Luck!

I am turning 30 next year. I certainly hope I’m not in peri-menopause! I have had my thyroid looked at a few times to make sure things were working properly and test results always come back good. I started taking BC last year to help with my acne, and after reading about the horrible things it does to your body I stopped about 4-5 months ago. I have been keeping track of my body over these past months and can tell when I am ovulating and when my period is about to start. With each I tend to get fatigued, yet I can’t sleep well, hungrier than normal and crave sweets. And currently my skin is broken out, it’s humiliating!
Any suggestions and I would be grateful
I find that the coconut oil takes away my cravings. If I take some in the am. then i’m good to go for the rest of the day.
I am glad I found this. I am hoping to meet with a friend this week about encouraging one another in making small changes toward better care of our bodies. I need help in making small steps into real food and exercise. I have gone too fast in the past and ended with injury and hormone problems. I need to lose about 75 pounds, but I really want to learn to make small changes in how our family cares for our bodies.
I need some motivation. Things that don’t belong in our house usually start creeping in about October. Ugh!! Ready to get back on the wagon.
I need some motivation, too. The last six weeks have had everything turned upside down, so now I am ready for a change. I am looking forward to getting back to eating ‘real food’ the way it was meant to be eaten.

Your approach to eating REAL food as an essential part of losing weight and being healthy is exactly what I teach. I enjoyed reading your post on milk. I would like to try raw milk with my family or at least go with one of the healthier milks on your list. We usually go with whole milk, but I’m sure we can do even better. It’s great to see that as demand for real food increases, there are more options becoming available. Thanks for all the helpful info.

Just confirmed my invite. I just found your site today. My husband and I are retired, in our 60′s with several health problems and I have been looking at beginning to eat the whole foods way. My question is: we are both diabetic. Will using sucanat, since it is not a refined sugar, cause less of a spike of the sugar than regular granulated sugar? Also, what about Stevia?
Unfortunately any sweets will spike blood sugars, but with less refined versions you’re at least getting a few more nutrients than the regular sugar. You’ve probably heard how fiber can slow the insulin response, well eating sugar with a healthy fat (butter, coconut oil, lard, tallow, etc.) also slows down that response!
I don’t know what Stevia does to blood sugars, but really since you both have diabetes, you need to *drastically* cut ANY sugars from your diet. Going to a whole foods diet will help you so much! If you can do that and REALLY start limiting all carbs (I know this gets tricky if you’re on meds/insulin already), then you could go OFF meds and get your health back! I hear stories of this happening ALL the time.

hello, I’ve just signed up. I was raised on a farm in northern WS many years ago and grew up on whole raw milk & real foods. When I left the farm began my life of conventional foods, I’m getting back to the basics and love it. My husband & I are also going glution free. He has heart issues and I have weight issues. In reading the labels on glution free packages the add Xanthan Gum. In reading about it I don’t think it sounds like something I should be eating, however it appears I need to use something to hold the ingredients together. Can you give me some suggestions. Thank you
What kinds of foods are you buying that has the Xanthan Gum in it?
I am trying to go gluton free and find it in all gluton free foods; baking mixes, crackers, etc. I have been trying to make my own bread, ina bread making machine, using Bob’s Red Mill Gluton free all purpose flour (could not find any bread flour) to avoid the Xanthan Gum. It is not turning out, it “falls”. I did make 3 birthday cakes using the same flour without Xanthan gum, they were ok,did not fall but had a tendency to be crumby. It is also in salad dressings. Thank you for responding.

I am doing gluton freenthen reason for my problem. Xanthan Gum as I understand it is what is used to hold everything together.xanthan gum is as natural as any other fermented corn sugar polysaccharide you can name i.e. Corn syrup.
Xanthan gum derives its name from the strain of bacteria used during the fermentation process, Xanthomonas campestris. Xanthomonas campestris is the same bacteria responsible for causing black rot to form on broccoli, cauliflower and other leafy vegetables. The bacteria form a slimy substance which acts as a natural stabilizer or thickener. The United States Department of Agriculture ran a number of experiments involving bacteria and various sugars to develop a new thickening agent similar to corn starch or guar gum. When Xanthomonas campestris was combined with corn sugar, the result was a colorless slime called xanthan gum. It is also used in oil and many other industrial uses. I just don’t think it should be in my diet. It is in grocery store gluten free bread. I didn’t think going gluten free and doing my own baking would be so difficult.
Xanthan gum is considered a polysaccharide in scientific circles, because it is a long chain of three different forms of sugar. What’s important to know is that all three of these natural sugars are present in corn sugar, a derivative of the more familiar corn syrup. The Xanthomonas campestris bacteria literally eat a supply of this corn sugar under controlled conditions, and the digestion process converts the individual sugars into a single substance with properties similar to cornstarch. Xanthan gum is used in dairy products and salad dressings as a thickening agent and stabilizer. Xanthan gum prevents ice crystals from forming in ice creams, and also provides a ‘fat feel’ in low or no-fat dairy products.
