Susan G. Komen for the Cure Doesn’t Understand Breast Cancer.
If they did, would they be promoting fast food?
Check out the ingredient list for just ONE Kentucky Fried Chicken menu item on their website, and trust me, the rest of them all look very similar:
KFC® Original Recipe® Filet
Fresh, Boneless Chicken Breast Filets, Rice Starch, Soy Protein Concentrate, Salt, Sodium Phosphates and Monosodium Glutamate. Breaded With: Wheat Flour, Salt, Monosodium Glutamate, Spices, and Garlic Powder. Battered With: Water, Wheat Flour, Tapioca Dextrin, High Amylose Corn Starch, Nonfat Dry Milk, Dried Whey, Dextrose, and Dried Egg Whites. Predusted With: Wheat Flour, Salt, Monosodium Glutamate, Spices, Nonfat Dry Milk, Dried Whey, Dried Egg Whites, and Garlic Powder. Breading Set in Low Trans Fat Oil (RDB) Soybean or Corn/Soy Blend With or Without TBHQ.
Contains Egg, Milk, Wheat and Soy
No wonder so many of us are sick!
Look at all that MSG (a nerve toxin, notice it’s listed twice), “RDB” trans fat oil (trans fat is a heart killer, and “RDB” means “Refined, deodorized, bleached” and therefore SUPER-processed), soy (too many issues to name, and ESPECIALLY note that it’s linked to increased breast cancer risk!), powdered dairy products (oxidized cholesterol), and the list goes on. (Not to mention the chicken they’re using from unsafe factory farms!)
Thanks to Jen for sending the following link and gettin’ me all riled up on this:

UPDATE! Everything below was written in 2010, as a 2020 update, I looked up their current sponsors, and if that can be trusted, they look much better now!

I gave up my Avon business because I didn’t like the charitable organizations they were supporting. Being pro-life, I am always on the look out for charities that support abortion (United Way or UNIFEM as was the case). Plus the fact that Avon is a huge pink ribbon contributor. A lot of cancer research money goes into stem-cell research on aborted fetuses when research has shown that the successful stem cell treatments come from umbilical cord blood stem cells.

Maybe we should start a “Race for the Prevention” campaign? I mean, if we could get the public to recognize how to prevent the stuff in the first place (as in, avoiding abortions, HFCS, consuming healthy fats, etc.), then there wouldn’t be a NEED for a CURE! (well, within reason… since smokers have never quit, there will always be a need for treatment)

Great article! Please join our group dedicated to ending this terribly misguided partnership. Let’s convince Susan G Komen that healthy eating is an important message they need to embrace.

Actually, Kelly, MSG is listed three times. Two would have been bad enough.
Sadly, this ingredient list is not bad compared to some fast foods. The 100% Angus beef burger at McDonald’s has 40+ ingredients in it. The white bread at Subway has mineral oil in it — that’s not even a food.

This is absolutely absurd! How very disappointing!

Here is a satire on the subject at Natural News. https://www.naturalnews.com/028641_Susan_G_Komen_pinkwashing.html

I’m glad I’m not the only one who has a problem with all those little pink ribbons around. But my Mom had breast cancer last year, so I sound…uncaring or something when I say that. I love to know that there are others out there who get it. 🙂
Geesh, guess I could add that link to this post, duh. I’ll add it now, in it I talk about my Mom’s cancer and my mammogram dilemma.
Kate says
I have a big problem with this foundation. This, for one. That they don’t look AT ALL towards nutrition for the answer but instead act like they totally clueless about what causes and prevents cancer. Second, you may want to know, they donate money to Planned Parenthood, which is extremely pro-choice and pro-abortion. As a Catholic mom I’m guessing you don’t like that either.
All of these “cancer cure” things generally drive me nuts because they are ignoring basic nutrition and the fact that cancer can easily be prevented or cured in MANY cases!! Ugh.
Raine Saunders says
As far as I can tell, no doctors or mainstream health organizations or companies really go for prevention. They go for ‘early detection’ which amounts to mammograms, colonoscopies, CT scans, and examinations which either determine a lump or an abnormality or not. If doctors find something, do they ever discuss real preventative measures? What I got from my doctor when I found a lump was that I should cut out fat from my diet and exercise more, and then “go get a mammogram”. I’ll never get one again! When I was told to this (twice), I was under 40, never had any prior cancer findings, had no family history, and then the mammogram and sonogram showed no cancer. And yet they recommended that I go and keep having them yearly. These are all the factors that doctors have been claiming for years that don’t fit into their criteria for having mammograms in the first place. Here’s my post about my experience and why I won’t have mammograms anymore:

And the ingredients in the fried chicken are so horrendous, I can’t even believe anyone in their right minds would promote these foods for health, let alone breast cancer research.

MSG is listed THREE times! It’s in the “chicken”, the breading, and the predust. Disgusting! I haven’t researched the Susan G. Komen Foundation, so thanks for the info.

What the Cluck? Tell KFC and Susan G. Komen for the Cure to stop pinkwashing!
With their “Buckets for the Cure” campaign, KFC and Susan G. Komen for the Cure are telling us to buy buckets of unhealthy food to cure a disease that kills women. When a company purports to care about breast cancer by promoting a pink ribboned product, but manufactures products that are linked to the disease, we call that pinkwashing. Make no mistake–every pink bucket purchase will do more to benefit KFC’s bottom line than it will to cure breast cancer. Join us in telling KFC and Susan G. Komen for the Cure to rethink this pinkwashing partnership.

This reminds me of the soda display that said something along the lines of “support the American Diabetes Assocation.” Hmmm, soda for diabetes? Frankenfood for breast cancer? There seems to be a pattern here… Maybe next we’ll see “cure lung cancer” ads of packs of cigs.
Christy says
It makes me sad that I have to explain to people I love why I don’t support the Susan G. Komen cause. I would guess that the original woman – Susan – would be saddened to know that her name and her cause have been hijacked in this way.

I saw this ad in a KFC window when I was getting gas the other day. My first thought: “Good, they made the bucket pink to remind people their chicken causes cancer.” I’m glad other people think it’s ridiculous as well.
‘with or without TBHQ’ … I’ll take my chicken without lighter fluid, please.
Ranee @ Arabian Knits says
We will never give money or aid to Susan G. Komen because they give money to Planned Parenthood, even with the link between abortion and breast cancer. Oh, they say the money isn’t for abortions, it is just to give women there a chance at breast exams, etc, but it makes sure that PP has more money for abortions when there is a known link between that and breast cancer, regardless of any moral issue I have with abortion anyway. We won’t even buy the pink products in the store when they money goes to the Susan G. Komen society. I don’t think they are actually interested
judy says
When you experience a loved one with breast cancer, you find out very quickly that they don’t want to cure you, they want to help you “manage” the cancer. In other words, they will drain you dry until you die.

I am going to send the kfc ingredient list to my neighbor. Her little boy doesn’t want to eat anything. She tried kfc and he didn’t want it. Good for him. She knows it’s not healthy but she’s desperate for him to eat something. I didn’t know all the junk that’s in it. She needs to see it too. I made homemade chicken broth yesterday and gave her a little for him. I am hoping he likes it.
Kim says
I couldn’t believe it when I saw that ad on TV! I thought they better be doubling the money they are contributing because they sure are increasing the cancer risk!
Melissa @Cellulite Investigation says
Unreal, Kelly! I’m always so torn with these kinds of charities. We did a heart walk last year to support a young family member who was born with a heart defect, and the whole walking trail was littered with little signs spouting misinformation about saturated fats and heart disease. I hate being a part of that kind of campaign, but everyone expects you to be onboard for such a great cause. My compromise was that I did the walk, but didn’t donate to the cause. I would much rather give money to support small farmers instead.
karen says
Right on, Kelly.
I’ve always been “down” on the Komen Foundation…for years they have been putting on running races and for years I’m thinkin’ “where’s the data that they are doing any good.” it’s the American Cancer Society in disguise.
On top of which, there is NOOOOO money going for prevention. I’ve never seen it in a category.
I’m delighted you are talking about this..and writing about it. I got grooosssed out when I read the ingredients of KFC. Thank God I never have to read those ingredients again. UGH!!
Bravo!!! Keep writing!!
Joy,
Karen

You know I could try and defend this double down thing, but I don’t think I’ll try after seeing that ingredient list! Though, to be honest, when traveling with children, it’s REALLY HARD to find something quick, low-carb, and relatively inexpensive. I know, bring your own, but in SW LA in July, coolers do not stay cool, even with a ton of ice.
Anyway, I don’t believe that Susan G Komen is really interested in helping women. They give $$ to planned parenthood and there are know links between abortion and breast cancer. I stopped donating to them when I found out that little tidbit.

Sorry sister! Didn’t mean to get you “all riled up” ; ). I knew you could shed more light on the subject.
Thank you!

I can’t believe there could be so much stuff in one little piece of chicken. Thanks for putting this out there. Maybe you are preaching to the converted, but we can always pass it on to our friends! And next time I’m on a road trip, I’ll be sure to pack my own meal rather than be held hostage to a choice of fast food outlets.
Kacie says
But have you seen the “Double Down” sandwich!? HAHAH. Why bother with bread when you can use two fried chickens instead?
