Kitchen Goals for November 2010

Believe it or not, another month is OUTA HERE.  It blows me away, yet I’m excited for November to be here for many reasons, and here’s one of the big ones:  I’m flying to Philadelphia for the Wise Traditions conference in one week and two days!  My only frustration as that weekend gets closer is looking at the list of talks and trying to figure out how I’m going to hit everything I want to.  Thankfully, the whole thing is recorded.

So tell me how your goals went for October

Did you get to everything you wanted to?  I haven’t gotten to my goals from 3 months ago, so we won’t go there.  :)

What are your goals for November?

Any new nourishing recipes you’re planning to try for Thanksgiving?  (By the way, remember Barb, who guest posted with those great Halloween ideas last month?  She said she’ll do the same for Thanksgiving, so stay tuned!)

Do you have a blog?

If you have a blog and plan to share your kitchen goals, feel free to grab the picture above, and then leave us a link to your post in the comments!

This will be our first Thanksgiving on the Specific Carbohydrate Diet. My six year old daughter was diagnosed last March with ulcerative colitis even though I’m pretty certain she’s had it since she was diagnosed with juvenile arthritis at two years old. She also has uveitis (eye inflammation). We’re hoping by changing what we eat, we can reduce the inflammation in my daughter’s body.

She is allergic to peanuts and tree nuts, so I will be experimenting with coconut flour recipes and will need to come up with some delicious sides that my parents will be willing to eat too. It should be interesting since I am not much of a cook, but I’m learning!

I look forward to seeing everyone’s November plans.

Susan, I think you are an awesome Mom for doing this for your child, even though it’s difficult. Did you know about the GAPS Diet Yahoo group? (Google it.) It would be a great resource for you!

Susan, I think you’re awesome, too! And in my experience, with the right coaching, grandparents can be the biggest supporters in promoting what their grandchild needs. Many just don’t understand what conventional food does to children because they’ve never faced it themselves. A we;;-placed reminder (in a non-confrontational way) that you all want what is best for this child will go a long way. Many blessings as you navigate these new waters for this holiday…you’ll be a pro by Christmas! :)

I’m happy to say I’m still on track with my goals. My food challenge of eating REAL food is almost to day 70! Pretty excited about that. The most challenging ‘rule’ is finding store bought items with 5 or less ingredients. Doesn’t sound tough until you start looking at labels!! I went to Whole Food Market the other day, which we don’t have in our area, and was so excited. I thought I’d be able to buy anything I wanted in there! But once I started looking at labels, I was surprised at the length of ingredients! I ended up buying a couple items but I’ve simply decided that my 5 ingredients or less is a tough one. I did find 2 jars of jelly that follow my rules and I’m super excited about that. Haven’t had jelly on toast for almost 70 days!! But I don’t regret it for a minute!! It’s become a fun challenge to see what I can find. My other rules are – not eating anything with an ingredient in it that I can’t pronounce (wow – that tosses out 98% of everything!) and – eat only what my great grandmother would recognize as food. I’d only planned on doing this challenge for 100 days but now I’m thinking it will be a way of life for me!! :)

It’s a bummer that we *can’t* be more relaxed in Whole Foods (or anywhere), isn’t it? How cool that you’re ready to make this a life-long challenge. :)

I hope your Grandson is doing well!

I am pleased to “announce” that I’m headed to pick up my first gallon of raw milk this week!

Kel – there were several comments at Kitchen Stewardship about making your own FCLO capsules by ordering the oil and buying empty capsules. Ever heard of anybody being successful doing that? :>)

Hi Lenetta,

(Did you get the email I sent you last night?)

Yay on the raw milk!!! You’ll never be able to go back you’ll love it so much!

I’ve heard of people filling their own capsules, but never knew anyone who did it. The liquid is much cheaper, so I can definitely see why someone would want to try that, but it just isn’t something I felt like doing! (Half our family takes the oil with no problem and the other 3 do the caps…)

I filled capsules for 6 months for my family (3 of us). I have a Cap

I totally agree with you Heather, I shoot the cinnamon to the back of my throat and every time I say to myself, “That is SO not even bad, it tastes sweet!” The new formula is amazingly good.

I’m happy to report I figured out how to keep my raw milk fresh for longer than a few days. I took the time to find the coldest spot in my refrigerator and that has done the trick. It tastes soooo good and I don’t think I’ll ever be able to go back to store-bought! Chalk me up as a raw milk convert!

Yea for raw milk! I, too, got our families first gallon of raw milk this month. I’m gluten/dairy/sugar free right now so I only tried a bit and it was wonderful – no pit of the stomach yucky feeling after swallowing.

This month my goal is to understand phytates and how to successfully cook my family gluten free meals that have been properly prepared (reading WAPF site last night…more confused than ever!)

Thanks Kelly for all the wonderful articles, recipes and links – I went cold turkey September 1st and have been overwhelmed since! Of course, that feeling is nothing compared to loving how much healthier my family has become in such a short amount of time! Onward!!

I too want to get raw milk this month–I have a local source not 15 minutes from me. It’s just off my beaten path, which is a lame excuse, I know. I have been able to get grassfed non-homogeneized milk from Whole Foods, and it’s the best milk I’ve ever had to date. I can’t wait to go raw!

This month I’m beginning my goal to eat REAL food the majority of the time, and would like more information on good fats to go along with that. I’m attempting to prepare my body for the possibility of conception in a few more months, however I need to change my eating habits in order to balance out hormones and to increase fertility. I’m already avoiding soy and corn syrup as well as scaling back on processed foods. Suggestions for quick snacks and lunches as well as fertility helpers are appreciated!

Teresa~ I don’t have tips on fertility but I do know a little about REAL food. I’ve been on my own food challenge of eating only REAL food for about 70 days and I have to say, it’s been great! Challenging at times, but well worth it. I’m using a few simple “rules” to guilde myself 1. Eat only food my great grandmother would recognize as food (this rule alone rules out a ton of things!) 2. don’t eat anything that has an ingredient that a third grader couldn’t pronounce 3. anything store bought has to have 5 ingredients or less. The most challenging one has been the ’5 ingredients or less’ rule. But its also the one that makes it easiest when looking at labels. It just takes a quick glance to see the L-o-n-g list of ingredients in most things store bought! Good luck!!

Eat a big breakfast, don’t go hungry, don’t overexercise, and just ask yourself everyday what you can do to nourish your body! Good luck! I’m working on this, too.

A few months ago, I thought I would be buying raw milk from my local health food store, but they have since informed me that they cannot get it. The owner of the store even thought it was not legal. It is legal in CA. I could not believe that she did not know that. You would think that a health food store owner would know that and all the benefits of raw dairy. Anyway, I’m unclear as to why they cannot get it. I think I need to finally bite the bullet and pay to have it shipped to me. If I can afford it, I will this month.

I did find some stainless steel cookware and a Pyrex bread pan at a garage sale and swap meet last month. Score! I’ve now replaced most of my non-stick metal pans with healthy options

My other goal for November is to order from US Wellness Meats. We have limited grass fed beef options (just ground beef) at our supermarket and I would like to try the other available cuts. I’ve been wanting to place an order with them, so now it’s a goal for the month!

My goal for November is going to be to start soaking my grains! So far I’ve put it off using the excuse that I haven’t made whey or buttermilk yet!

Well, I just made an outrageously good coconut flour chocolate cake from the TropicalTraditions website. Next I want to try that black bean cake recipe from the comment thread here a week or so ago (was that Paula?), but I have to wait a few weeks or hubs might automatically discount it because it’s not the cake that I made this week. :-D

I’m also working on a grain free meal plan- not for this month, but I’m working on it this month because I want to try it in January, and I’m sure that December will be too busy to plan.

Crazy! I just clicked on your link from another blog because the title caught my eye–I had literally just finished posting my kitchen goals! I have been to your website before though, and always think it’s awesome. Here are my tasks http://kitchenrecovery.blogspot.com/2010/11/running-list-of-kitchen-tasks.html .
I love this idea for each first Tuesday, I guess it was meant to be. ;)

Oh man! I read Sally’s comment and it reminded me that I need to get a meat order in before the sixth. Add that to the list! And I better go eat something, because all the talk about chocolate cake is making me hungry again.

I love your blog. I have new goals every month. But they have not been very ambitious the last few months because of morning sickness :P Hoping to get back into the swing of things this month. And so excited to be getting raw milk soon!!! It’s only for the winter, but I’ll take what I can get. Not too many options here in West MI ;)

Mary, you know I’m in West Michigan, too, right? (Rockford)

You must be talking about Lubbers farm? That’s where we get our milk – I’ll be there later today actually, maybe I’ll run into you there sometime!

Congrats on the new baby to come, and how awesome that you’ll have raw milk while you’re pregnant. Don’t forget to also eat lots of pastured eggs, real butter, and fermented cod liver oil! :)

Yes, I know you are in West MI :) Yes, Lubbers. We’ve been on their waiting list for a while. So excited that they have openings for the winter at least. We’re in Grandville, so they are really close.

I haven’t been able to each much good stuff the last few months but at least I do get butter, eggs and FCLO pretty much every day! I know those have critical nutrients for the 1st trimester. And thankfully butter and eggs have actually sounded good :) Now that I’m moving into the 2nd trimester it’s time to bring on the meat…and milk!
