So how did you do with your March kitchen goal?
I bombed on all three of my goals. I didn’t get around to trying the donuts yet, I just stuck with my tried and true soaked bread recipe all month because I didn’t feel like messing with the sourdough for a while, and I can’t remember for sure what happened with the bread bowls, I seem to recall trying to change something in the recipe (who knows why I do such things) and they turned out like pancakes.
What’s up in your kitchen for April?
This month my only goal, kitchen or otherwise, is to finish up my online Rookie class! Oh wait, I do have one kitchen goal, it’s been on my list for a week, and it’s not even time consuming, but I just haven’t gotten to it yet (you know how that is): I want to put together Wardeh’s Homemade Herb Seasoning Salt – she says it’s super tasty and it packs an extra nutritional punch. Read all about it at that link.
Please share all the scoop in the comments about what’s going on in your kitchen or leave a link there to your post about it.
Totally unrelated stuff:
- Now and then I’ll throw something dumb up on Twitter when my traffic is low-ish for the day, hoping to get more hits. (Shameless, yes, but when you’re not making much cashola, traffic stats are all you’ve got!) So the other day I tweeted, “What if sex was bad for you? http://ow.ly/1umcp”, my other one I’ll throw up now and then: “What does size 7x underwear have to do with nutrition? http://ow.ly/1uRun”.
- Speaking of Twitter, I’ve got over 12,000 followers now thanks to Ann Marie’s suggestion and the best $50 I ever spent. (SO easy, for literally a couple minutes a week, if that. I’ll get a small commission if you click through there, and thank you.)

Kitchen goals? I don’t even remember what mine were from March, ha. But I did try out raw milk and things made from it, and being to sprout spelt again, and try pickles. The first two — great! The last — miserable failure (it did well for 2 days then started growing fuzzy mold). I also started brewing kombucha (I’ll find out in a day or so how that went). I’m all about fermented food now and I never thought I would be. So my goals now — try pickles again and do it right, try fermented cranberries (I imagine it would sort of taste like the cranberry kombucha), get the sourdough going! And maybe more fermented food.
I really hate even the smell of sauerkraut and regular pickles are just okay, I don’t even technically like the smell of kombucha (though I love to drink it). So I never saw this obsession with fementing coming! But fermented food + raw milk + sprouted grains + sunlight is curing my kids of their allergies!!
Well, I don’t feel so bad now. I think I had 4 goals for March and the only one I accomplished was telling everyone I know about real foods. Still ongoing. I was going to try Ann Marie’s recipe for sourdough bread but I never saw it up. I didn’t get that book about ideal soil. I never got around to ordering the water kefir grains (through your site).
So now it’s April and I’m thinking gardens, still hoping to get some fruit and veg going. I found another recipe for sourdough starter, kitchen stewardship? I’m going to try that. I’ve been buying sourdough bread from Trader Joe’s. Does anyone know if that is made with starter?
Thanks for linking up my herb seasoning salt – you’re going to love it, I know! With as beautiful soaked bread as you make, I know you’ll get there with sourdough.
I’m trying to think what goals I should set for April. At the very least, I want to start using the liver I bought from US Wellness Meats – to have some every third day would be a good. I also want to clean my kitchen – it needs it desperately!
Kate, I’m glad I’m not the only one with funky pickles. My family loves them, too, so I’d love to get that right someday.
Linda, check the ingredient label and see if there’s any yeast in it?
Wardeh, your kitchen sure looks spotless in all your videos! I tried putting some of those small liver pieces I had in the freezer into meatballs yesterday and it didn’t fly. They didn’t say anything about noticing a taste, but no one ate them much. I think it’s because I made a creamy mushroom sauce for them and that doesn’t hide flavors as well as a red sauce. Guess what leftovers is tonight?
My April goal is to find or make a healthier mayonnaise. My hubby eats TONS of mayo, especially in the summertime, and he is a self-proclaimed mayonnaise snob. Only Kraft will do. I’m going to try your recipe if I can find a light sesame oil…the only kind my grocery store carries is toasted, I guess, because it’s very strong and dark.
Oh, and I’m glad to hear that I’m not the only one who has failed at pickles. I made the NT recipe and oh. my. goodness. Those were the nastiest things I have ever seen, smelled or tasted. I’ve been scared to try them again!
I posted over on my own blog about my kitchen goals this month. They are…
1. Purchase all produce and meat from our local farmers markets; purchase organic, naturally raised whenever possible and practical.
2. Start our vegetable and herb garden.
3. Reexamine our use of plastics and stop using them in the microwave.
And I have a bunch of reading to do!
Here’s a link: http://godandchocolate.wordpress.com/2010/04/06/april-2010-kitchen-goals/
Well, one of my goals was to start a food/wellness blog, which i did here:
http://amoderatelife.blogspot.com
So, that is fun! I also made my sourdough, fermented veggies, looked into a real milk club–which i will join next month, made Kombucha again and a bunch of other healthy stuff…
this months goals are to continue what i started–check in with jenny at the nourished kitchen about her real food challenge to see if i am missing anything…continue with bone broths and making homemade dog food…additionally i am going to work with my husband to set a healthy schedule as he begins back at work…this will include bringing healthy breakfasts–finding time for working out and sleep. Oh and i will start to plant my outdoor garden!
Good luck all in your april endeavors at health and wellness!
My kitchen goals are more snack goals. We eat well at meals but when we’re running late I resort to crackers. So I want to stop running late (planning ahead) but when we are grab something healthy for the kids.
We’re finally moved into our new house. Yippee! Now that I have a kitchen again (phew!!), my next goal is to get ALL the appliances set up and unpack my pots/pans. Oh, I’ve missed them so! We are living with a tiny refrigerator until the energy rebate deal mid-month, so that is going to be a challenge…
My kitchen goals? To use it more often! I really enjoy cooking, but life really gets in the way. We have not one, but two Kitchen Aid mixers, and I would like to do more with them than just make cookies at Christmas.
I would also like to start making more meals at home. Eating out gets so convenient with our hectic schedule. There are lots of great things I want to make. I only hope I can find the time and motivation to get them done!
My first time to post, and I am a new “follower” (I subscribed yesterday off a link from Wardeh’s blog somewhere…), so this whole kitchen goals FOR A WHOLE MONTH (!?!) is new to me! Easy, though, since I regularly set (and sometimes achieve!) goals!
#1 Keep up with my fundamentals e-class I’m doing with Wardeh’s group
#2 keep using the fundamentals I am learning, at least twice per week, and start teaching them to the kids so they can use them when they’re cooking
#3 remember to take my supplements every day.
This last one might be a stretch, but if I don’t make it a goal, I KNOW it won’t happen. We’re trying to get pregnant, and my diet just ain’t what it should be all the time!
Goals for last month included getting my garden started, and yes, that IS a kitchen goal! Just ask my hubby, who asked what I was baking the other night (I think he was hoping for bread?) and I said, “Soil!” His look was priceless, but it’s part of my frugality: reusing soil to start seeds, but “sterilizing” it first to get rid of the pathogens that cause damping off. We also learned more about how to live without a microwave since ours died a while back (right before I learned how bad they are for us… God truly works in mysterious ways!), and have been cooking more in cast iron to the point that we rarely use the other (nonstick) pans and I hopefully can wean myself off of that crutch soon!
BTW, I made the seasoned salt last month, too–and LOVE it. I also snuck some kelp into the pepper, since my family is more a pepper than a salt group–and they NEVER knew!
Upcoming goal: to start my own blog (again?), but I have to be realistic about the timeframe for that one. It will probably happen after the vegetable garden is in its permanent home.
Hi Michael,
I have a tip for you, one that I need to get better at: planning ahead! It’s a lot of work once a month or so, but it prevents the convenience trips to the drive-thru, or for us it prevents us having to eat so much grilled cheese!
Dani,
I’m glad you found your way here!! Kelp in the pepper huh? I’m going to do it, too, thanks for the tip! (What a super sneaky idea!)
Kel
My goal is once we run out of our current bottle, is to make my own catsup! We have a brand that has HFCS in it because it was the only type the store had and we didn’t feel like driving to another store just to buy catsup, since we don’t eat it very often. It would be nice to have a convenient HFCS free catsup though.
My goals… OK, so I’m cheating because its now mid-April LOL but hey…. gotta start somewhere.
Recover the family from 10 days with the in-laws (which means lots of eating out or take out brought in. they insist. and I am not going to start that battle with them right now!)
Try making my own sauerkraut (check~started yesterday!!!)
Order water kefir grains/water kefir starter pack and make my own pop!
Start blogging again and write about my food “adventures”
