- Read about my sourdough bread woes…maybe I’ll get it right, someday.
- Kent sent me this article about Meijer (our local grocery store) and their new food rating system. Of course I couldn’t keep my mouth shut about some of their ideas on what belongs on the “unfavorable list”, so I commented there last week. Go take a look and leave your comment, too! (Then let us know here in the comments what you said!) The more they see that this topic is a hot-button for so many, the faster we can make a difference as we move forward in this fight for Real Food!

Just a quick note: the Mind the Microwave Challenge is actually at http://www.kitchenstewardship.com/mind-mic-invite. Thanks to all who come on over to sign up! I’m just challenging you to consider your microwave use consciously this month (not throw out the mic). Thanks, Kelly! Rebecca, I’ll be posting this week on practical tips to avoid the mic.

I second Rebecca’s link to the sourdough home website. I tried to make a starter previous to finding that site and it did not work at all. His way works beautifully! However, my first (and only) attempt at the bread turned out a lot like yours, Kelly. I think it was because the starter was so new. I’m working on aging it properly now, before trying again. I’ve read that many attempts at bread making with a new starter fail. As the sourdough ages, it supposedly works much better. Also, his bagel recipe is awesome!
I saw a good sourdough bread recipe at the Sara’s Musings website that looked good, and I plan to try that as well.
Good luck with sourdough, everyone!

Hi “new Rebecca”! Thanks for finally saying hello! 🙂 I’ll definitely look at that site when I’m ready to try yet again… thanks for sharing it!
Rebecca in Michigan, after you read over the other comments, if you’re still wondering how to warm up something specific that wasn’t covered, comment again and I’ll try to help you.
Catherine, I totally agree! If you go to this post https://kellythekitchenkop.com/2008/02/kitchen-gadgets.html, you’ll find my toaster oven which I looooooove. It’s a convection oven AND a toaster oven AND a broiler AND a defroster AND a regular oven!
Wardeh, that’s such a great, helpful post, that I’m adding the link to my microwave post, thank you!
Julie, I can’t wait to get ours out of here, either!

I have a microwave but never use it. I really want to get rid of it but I think my husband would freak out…not that he uses it either. It just sits there unplugged. I think getting rid of it is just a symbol of a new place in life. Hopefully soon he’ll be ready to officially part with it.

Jumping in to help Rebecca~we’ve been without the microwave for many years. Here is how I reheat everything on the stovetop and/or oven/toaster oven. It is much, much, much easier than you think and pretty soon, you’ll forget that microwaves exist.

Kelly, I hope it is okay that I share that link.

Hi Rebecca,
We don’t have a microwave oven but we do have a toaster oven that we use and love. There are also small counter top convection ovens that heat foods really fast. Convection ovens use hot airflow to speed up the cooking process.

I just pulled out my recipe for my starter. Never tried it, but planned on starting today. Thanks for the reminder. Great minds working alike again.
I also have a question about the microwave. We don’t use our microwave to cook things, but to reheat. I would love to get rid of the microwave all together, but how do you reheat things like the soaked baked oatmeal; casseroles; meats – sausage, hamburgers, steaks, chicken; or ; leftovers?

Hi there!
I’m a long time reader but a first time poster, at least I think this is my first time posting!
I’m a relative newcomer to this whole nourishing diet thing. LOL. I’ve made some major changes but still have a ways to go. The Bezian post really gave me a push towards trying sourdough, and I figured (nutritionally speaking) learning how to make bread properly would give me a big bang for my buck. I’m not an expert. As a matter of fact, my starter is just now ready to go so wish me luck.
I have been searching for sourdough information left and right and I found a site I would like to share. It’s https://www.sourdoughhome.com/ He seems to be a very thorough teacher, as well as a darn good writer. I can’t wait to try out some of his recipes, he has a recipe for whole wheat bread that he swears rises wonderfully. He also has many helpful tips and a good technique section.
I hope this site helps you! And the best of luck on your sourdough bread journey.
Rebecca
