Good morning readers. Along with some juicy links below, today I also have a big announcement to make…
Michigan is hosting our first regional Weston A. Price conference near Detroit next month! I'll be there speaking on Saturday (“Bringing your family from junk food to real food“), and also on a panel on Sunday. Here are the other speakers who will be there: Sally Fallon Morell, Chris Masterjohn, Kaayla Daniel, Wayne Feister, Sarah Pope, Kathryn Pirtle, and Mela Belle.
There will also be a breakfast for chapter leaders on Saturday morning. Which reminds me, be sure to get involved with your local Weston Price chapter if you're not already – find yours here or if you're near West Michigan, join us! I've loved being co-chapter leader with my friend Janice and we've got a lot of great people on our board, too, so no one is stuck with too much work. There's always a lot to learn at the meetings and great new real foodies to meet, too. 🙂
Now, here's my random mix-up for today…
- Our two younger kids crack me up how much they're into food. They've always got ideas of what they want us to try. Our daughter loves being with me in the kitchen, looking through her cookbooks, and watching cooking shows for new ideas. It was our 7 year old who thought of these potato boats, and the other day he announced what he wanted for breakfast – some berry yogurt crepes that he saw it on Diners, Drive-ins and Dives. He asked me to make a thin pancake, then spoon (whole milk) yogurt in the middle with berries, wrap it up, and and add more yogurt and berries on top. Doesn't it look yummy? Maybe I should put it in its own post…
- Have you seen this one? It's Official: Fluoride Makes Your Kid Dumb: “A retired dentist friend of mine has been saying for years that fluoride in tap water is dangerous. And for years I've been half wondering why she thinks it's dangerous, and half hoping she's just wrong. Well, I can't ignore the warnings anymore. A Harvard University study has concluded that children who live in areas with highly fluoridated water have significantly lower IQ scores than kids who live in areas with low-fluoride water.” Thanks Jennifer for sending!
- Make sure you don't miss the newly revised 2nd edition of Heather's Nourished Baby e-book. It would make a great gift for a new Mom! You'll learn:
- How to decode your cravings while nursing
- Why you should skip rice cereal and go for digestion enhancing stews
- What the latest research says on introducing peanuts, eggs and other “allergenic” foods
- Why experts believe purees can lead to overeating
- And lots more. 🙂
- Have you seen this video on the GIANT from last week where I show you my not too sparkly moment?
- Saturday I put up a post on Facebook asking for advice on high caloric foods for a 4 year old burn victim. If you have more ideas, please share!
- Thank you Dana, the author of this article on Reclaiming Valentines Day, for sending it my way with these comments, “It's time to reclaim Valentine's Day as a time to celebrate love, friendship, & a healthy heart, not an excuse for a sugar coma.” And here's an excerpt: “At least once a week there are treats handed out. This week was the topper: On Tuesday, Valentine's Day, my daughter brought home about 30 pieces of candy after eating several cookies + cupcakes + a Capri Sun. Wednesday was a birthday for another child whose parents provided large cupcakes + Capri Suns + goodie bags with candy. Then on Thursday, her teacher had an ice cream sundae party for the students who had memorized their times tables. That was in one week!” That's one thing I'm especially grateful for now that we're homeschooling, is avoiding all of that junk!
- Along with that same topic, I wrote in another Facebook post on Friday about a conversation I overheard at Blockbuster, which caused a groan to pass my lips without me even realizing it. So in that FB conversation, a blogger I hadn't read before shared a link to her recent post and I'm glad she did – Thoughts on Being Rude: “Deference around food has its roots in a good place, in cultural courtesy and comfort and hospitality. But as our food climate has shifted — to where it’s not just a matter of eating something that maybe isn’t your favorite, but eating something that actually could be harmful — those notions no longer cut it.“
Have a great week!

My take on speaking up? You have to respect yourself/your family as well as others. Keeping your mouth shut entirely and refusing to say a word isn’t respecting yourself. Being rude and judgmental (“WHY are you eating that poison?!”) isn’t respecting the other people. There’s a middle ground.
“We prefer not to drink lemonade; may we have some water instead? Thanks so much for being accommodating.”
A lot of people would disagree with me but I’m over it. Stand up for yourself, just be polite. When we have guests we serve kombucha and some other interesting things, and we don’t mind if they don’t want to try it or don’t seem to like it. We always offer but they are welcome to have water or whatever else as well. We don’t expect guests to like everything we make or have the same food choices and preferences we do. That’s fine! And I’d hope it would be the same elsewhere too. I wouldn’t like it if a guest said “This is disgusting, I’m not eating it,” but saying “Oh, no thank you, I don’t prefer that” is just fine!
So, stick up for your beliefs. Say something. Smile and be respectful while you do it. Everybody wins.

My kids love crepes! I kind of forget about them sometimes, so we go in spurts of having them. That just might be lunch today! We will often do peanut butter and jam ones (with whatever homemade butter we have and usually just cut up strawberries or mashed berries instead of jam). Homemade chicken salad with dried cherries is always a favorite filling, too (and makes a great quick, easy dinner!).
Excited to see the details of the conference! Unfortunately, I don’t think it is in our budget, but I am going to see if I can find a way!

Hi Kelly,
What about homemade raw ice cream. As you know, with raw cream and raw egg yokes. Homemade stew with homemade bone broth?
