Do you want a unique avocado dip recipe? A dip for parties that will wow a crowd?
One that's only made with Real Food? Well then I've got just the thing for you, my awesome reader friends! Wait 'til you see how easy this is, and it's got a blend of such unique flavors that will surprise your mouth and make it unbelievably happy at the same time. (Thank you to my friend, Megan, who once again has given me a new favorite recipe.)
Avocado Dip Recipe with a Twist
Ingredients
- Dice 8 avocados
- Remove the seeds from 5 pomegranates – yep you read that right! Doesn't sound like it would go together with avocados does it? TRUST ME on this one!
- About 3/4 teapoon sea salt – or more until the taste is just right
- About 1 teaspoon garlic powder – again add more if needed
- 16 ounce feta cheese crumbled
Instructions
- Just stir your ingredients together and serve them with tasty, organic corn chips (to avoid those nasty GMOS) or give celery sticks a try if you're trying to stay away from grains or cut back on carbs.
I can't wait to hear if you love it, too! Be sure to tell us if you know of any other odd ingredients that actually taste really good with avocado? Avocados are loaded with nutrients and I love that my kids are all over them, too, although I'm assuming many kids don't eat them due to that green thing they've got going on.
See below for how to get seeds out of pomegranates!
- Be sure and try my traditional Homemade Guacamole recipe, too, for a healthy snack!
How to get seeds out of pomegranates:
People in the comments suggested one of these handy tools, which I want to try. Megan said to just bash 'em good with a rolling pin, or something like that, to get the seeds out. Kent just cuts them into quarters, and puts them in water and starts getting them out with his fingers. The seeds will sink and the white gunk floats so you can pick that out and then get to the seeds. I think the first two options might be better, though, because you'll retain more of the yummy juice that way. Let me know if you have more tips!

Here’s the deseeder: https://www.amazon.com/Seed-Out-Second-Pomegranate-Deseeder/dp/B0051DSHQU
Amazon is charging $13.99 for it on Amazon Prime. I think I paid $3.99 at my local grocery store! But it does work great.

My Costco is now carrying frozen pomegranate seeds. Not ogranic, but I cannot usually find poms that are either
KitchenKop says
Do you know how they compare price-wise?
Thanks,
Kelly

Same basic technique, but a little more elaborate.

Try it this way! WAY easier!

But the only thing about that is you lose all that tasty juice that @Jamie mentioned above.
Martha says
Thanks for asking her! I’ll definitely try the wooden spoon next time. 🙂

Hey all, I asked Megan some of your questions and here’s what she said:
“You only eat the seeds inside. I have never cooked with them. My kids have been picking the seeds out for years now. It is one of our favorite fruits. It was wonderful too because it kept them busy for a long time. A good way to get the seeds out is to whack the pomegranate with a wooden spoon all over. Keep on hitting the pomegranate. When you open the pomegranate the seeds are very loose and easy to get out. That’s all I know. I hope it was helpful.”
Jeanmarie says
I bought a gadget at the store yesterday that helps you get the seeds out. You cut the pomegranate in half, score each half around the cut edges several times, put it cut-side down on the gadget (basically just an inverted bowl-shaped frame, like a colander with big holes so the seeds can fall through) and whack the pomegranate several times. The seeds fall through as you smash the half. I had to pick out a little bit of the white flesh, but it was easy. I used half in a fruit salad. I’ll try the other half with avocado tomorrow if one is ripe enough. I’m intrigued by this recipe, but this is sized for a crowd, wow! Eight avocados and five pomegranates! I cook for two so I’m cutting it way down.
KitchenKop says
Hi Jeanmarie!
Don’t size it TOO far down, though, it’s so good you’ll want a lot. 🙂

I’m definitely trying it the moment the avocados are ripe! Maybe by tonight.

I usually add diced tomatoes and fresh-squeezed lime juice to my avocados (along with a dash of garlic and plenty of chopped cilantro), making a guacamole dip. YUM! I would’ve never thought to mix pomegranates and avocados but since I love them both, I’ll have to try it now. Thanks for the fresh, new idea, Kelly!
Jill says
Such an interesting and unique dip idea! I’ll bet the texture is awesome too! Beautiful to look at. I must try this!
Jamie says
I love this combo idea! Thank you for sharing it! We are going to have tasty tacos tonight!
By the way, from the picture of your dip, it looks like you left all the little seed/juice pods intact. When I smashed the juicy membrane to get the seeds out it’s just a mush that is left after all the seeds are picked out. So I just put my mush into a fine mesh strainer and pushed all the Pomegranate juice out into my mixing bowl, then added the Avocado, mushed it, added salt and garlic powder, and WOW! The flavor is delish, but it is a smooth brown paste. Not the pretty bright green with big red perfect pomegranate juice pods. lol!
KitchenKop says
Oh my gosh that sounds awesome!
Mary Ann says
After mixing, put avocado pit on top of dip, pushing it 1/2 down to keep it from browning
Marcia says
I’d love to try this, as I’m a big avocado fan. I’ve never bought pomegranates, since I don’t know how to prepare them. Does this recipe call for only the seeds? If so, can/should I be eating any other part of the fruit? Are they always consumed raw? I want to include new healthful foods, but am clueless here.
Barb says
Hubby and I eat our scrambled eggs with guacamole & pomegranate seeds whenever pomegranates are in season. I suspect that this dip would be awesome!!
KitchenKop says
Really, with eggs? I’ll have to try that, too!
Amanda Yoder says
Do you have a trusted source for garlic or onion powder? Everyone I can source is from China and the rest don’t say where they’re from, which usually also means china. I know for now, we’re using garlic and onion salt from real salt, but I miss not having to have salt, just the powder!
KitchenKop says
I just get organic right now. If you learn more, let us know. Thanks!

Martha says
I’d love to try this, but getting the seeds out of pomegranates drives me nuts!
leigh says
I’m curious too!
ValerieH says
How does this work with the pomagranate seeds? I usually spit them out after sucking onthe seeds. Are you supposed to eat the seeds?
KitchenKop says
Yes, you just eat them whole, it’s surprisingly SO good! A little sweet and a little sour… Sounds crazy I know!
Chris says
You shouldn’t spit the seeds out, Eats them! Seeds and skins are usually the most nutritious part of the fruit, yo!
