Guess who has a birthday this week? Yep, I'll be 43. Kent & I celebrate our 23rd anniversary this month, too. Here's how we're going to celebrate:
We're going to Art Prize downtown!
We did that last year on our anniversary and had a blast. Here's the thing: we aren't “artsy fartsy” types at all – I've never appreciated that side of life like I should, but we loved this. Apparently a zillion other people did, too, because it was a HIT for our city on the first year. Grand Rapids felt like Chicago – there were people walking around everywhere and a lot going on. It was really cool looking at all the different types of art and wondering, “How would someone even think to do this?” We went down there three times, twice with the kids and they were asking to go back.
- Here's one the kids loved: Nesse. (That one won't let you copy the picture, so you have to click over to see it…)
- This one caught a lot of attention:
- While most entries were really neat, there were still plenty that had us asking, “Huh?” Like this one. My brain still just doesn't “get” some art.
- OH, and then there was the one that got me all riled up: Meet Your Meat. I had to come home and write a post about that one. (Click that link to read it.)
Here's what the 2010 website said about last year:
Neither the organizers nor the city were prepared for the massive public response.
By the first Sunday, restaurants had run out of food. By the next Sunday, hotels had run out of rooms. On the final day of the event, a line to see the winning piece stretched down the street for over two blocks. Ultimately, the venue with the winning piece would host over 80,000 visitors, while the number of total event visitors topped 200,000. Total votes cast during the event: 334,219.”
Cool, huh?
OK, onto some Real Foodie chit chat…
- Do you know anyone who home schools??? Will you tell them about this post? Three Reasons Homeschooling Families Need This e-Course. (BIG note though: I’m actually using it myself to supplement what my middle schooler will be learning at public school, because you KNOW it’s going to be nothing but anti-saturated fat crap. So even if you don’t homeschool, you should look into this e-course, too!)
- This Fox News video on Alzheimers & Turmeric verifies something I'd read years ago before I started Kent on turmeric capsules: Studies show that countries who consume more turmeric have much fewer cases of Alzheimers. Also, have you read this post on Alzheimers and Coconut Oil? There I tell you a little about Kent's Dad, who was diagnosed with Alzheimers a few years back. 🙁
- I just wrote all about our delicious dinner tonight over on Facebook – go check it out. Will you please “like” me there, and tell your friends, too?
- Did you catch the post last week on High Fructose Corn Syrup? This gal, Cynthia, is a WHIZ on that topic and she's answering all our burning questions. In the comments there be sure to read all the hullabaloo about how the Corn Refiners Association is now trying to change the name from HFCS to “Corn Sugar”? Consumption of High Fructose Corn Syrup dropped 20% last year and they’re scrambling, he he he… 🙂
- Have you seen my recipe for super simple homemade mayo?
Have a great week everyone and God bless!

I really would like for my brother to get his kids on that nutrition e-course, but as he’s currently in the hospital and finances are tight, I don’t think that it’ll happen. Hopefully she’ll be running the course again in a few months?
On the upside, despite having nearly died a few days ago and still being quite weak, he brought up that my dad has been telling him how good he’s felt since he started drinking raw milk. I don’t get to talk to my brother that often, so I’ve been passing info on through emails to mom, and my brother finds it all interesting and believes it… but believing something and doing something are two different things. But my dad telling him how much better he feels drinking raw milk, my brother told me that I might be the only person that might convince him to try it. *lol* I told him I’d bring him a bottle when he gets out of the hospital. 😀
I should mention that my brother has Crohn’s and ends up in the hospital quite frequently. His doctors nearly killed him several times throughout the years, but the whole ordeal lead him into becoming an RN. I would like to see him do SCD, but I think their lifestyles won’t permit it (4 kids, full time job, and full time school) for a long time. In the mean time, I’ve heard that raw milk alone can drastically improve Crohn’s patients, and if I can get him to reduce his grains, increase fats, and switch to coconut oil (expensive) or lard (hard to get), maybe it’ll be enough until he’s out of school and can spend more time in the kitchen.
*sigh* And just last weekend my niece piped up to tell me that her teacher says that potato chips are healthier than popcorn if you slather salt and butter on your popcorn. I decided to keep my mouth shut for the time being and work on her dad instead. 🙂

Good one, Kelly. Too bad that’s what it takes.

Linda,
You know when they’ll listen? When they’re sick of being sick. 🙁

Happy Birthday Kelly!!!!!!

But when will they listen???? I get the feeling that certain members of my family just tune me out.
Happy birthday, Kelly, and happy 23rd anniversary. We will be celebrating our 25th next month.

Kate,
That diet makes me sick just reading about it, those poor people who are falling for such CRAP!!! It makes me more determined than ever – we all have to keep telling everyone the TRUTH!!!
KitchenKop says
Thanks everyone! 🙂
Gina, tell my birthday buddy I said happy birthday, too!
And happy birthday, Valerie!
Heather, that picture did look crazy, but when we were there (all 3 times), it wasn’t overwhelming at all – it was just SO fun – like I said, it felt like walking around downtown Chicago – there was an excitement in the air – I can’t explain it, but you have to come this year!

Happy birthday Kelly!!
I happened to see an article in the “Woman’s World” magazine at a check out yesterday. They are recommending a new “French Atkins” diet. It consists on low- and no-fat dairy, lean meats, very small amounts of whole grains, and no vegetables on certain days and non-starchy veggies on others. They recommend eating “egg white omelets, lean turkey, fat-free cheese” for many meals and “no more than 4 egg yolks per WEEK.” Their reader who tried it claims she lost 13 lbs. in a WEEK! I went to their Facebook page and told them how dangerous this diet really is! It would be great if others could do the same because that is seriously a huge health risk!

@Jenn! “We believe in butter.” LOL!!
Today is my 43rd birthday!

Happy Birthday Kelly. I live over here in Oakland County and wanted to make it to the art show, but we didn’t. What attracted me to it was the pictures I seen on Pure Michigan, they also showed Nesse. After seeing the picture of the crowd you showed I am glad we didn’t go now, I’m not fond of crowds (that big). Have a great Birthday.

Happy Birthday! My husband will be 43 also this Wed. on the 22nd. I just started reading your blog last week and I am taking your class online. I have learned so much! We popped our first real popcorn last night with cocunut oil and organic corn (I bought the popper you suggested). It was delicious and I so enjoy watching my children enjoy healthy real food! Thanks so much!
Beth says
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Kelly! You are such a blessing to so many people. Just think: By helping me you are helping 5 people at once (my family) so you are helping exponentially through the individuals you are helping one at a time through your work (make sense?). Beth

The thing about wanting to supplement school health class nutrition info is so true — I don’t even have kids, but I’m wondering when I do, if I’ll be able to pull them out of health class… not because I would have a problem with them learning about sexuality, but because I don’t want them misled into thinking satfat is bad! “I’m sorry, my beliefs are incompatible with the health class curriculum — I believe in butter.”
