My goals are all over the place this month – some food related, some not…

My goal last month:
Last month I said I wanted to try making bagels. Nope, haven’t done it yet. BUT a couple of you sent me your recipes (thank you!) and I did get them printed and on the counter, so that usually means I’m getting closer. I’m a little afraid to make them, because if I really like them…well, they’re pretty grain-heavy, that’s for sure. One bagel is generally 4-5 oz., which is like 2 1/2 slices of bread, right? It won’t be something I’ll make all the time, but still, I certainly don’t need one more starch that I love in my life, you know?
On the agenda for this month:
So I may or may not get to the bagels, but this month first of all I need to get ready for a talk I’ll be giving at the Middle School soon on nutrition – I’m so excited because then those 60 kids will go home and talk to their parents! One thing I’m going to do is teach them how to make themselves a healthy breakfast – fun huh?! I’m taking in a few electric frying pans and we’ll go at it. I’ll let you know how that goes and try to remember to take pictures.
Also this month I want to cross something off my list unrelated to food: finish my income taxes. I’ve done our own for long enough that I’m used to dealing with all the home business stuff (I did day care for over 20 years), so it’s not difficult, but I just have trouble finding the time. Especially when the kids had TWO snow days last week, one day of school, and then TWO days off for winter break! So it’s tricky getting anything done, but it’s nice having them here, too. Sledding, homemade hot cocoa or vanilla steamers, extra snuggles in the morning, etc…

i had some excess raw milk so i clabbered it until it separated, strained it and made fresh cheese. yum! of course now i have tons of whey, which means like it or not March is the month i finally start lacto-fermenting veggies. been wanting too for a year now, and just never made time to learn the process and make a batch.
highly recommend clabbering milk to all you raw milk drinkers. it was easy, fun and it’s great to have fresh raw cheese. the fresh cheese has topped pizza, muffins, burgers and been stirred into mashed potatoes and collard greens. yumness everywhere…
I am exploring the possibility of making my own formula. I am needing to supplement my breastmilk for my 7 month old. If anyone reading these comments has experience I’d love to talk to you! I also love any thoughts on using something besides RAW milk, I am looking at a milk sold locally that is grass fed, NOT ultra-pasturized, vat-pasturized to I think 155, not homoginzed whole milk
My husband is still on the fence on raw milk and the only place locally I can find raw milk doesn’t have any shares right now.
I’d love any feedback, I’ve been looking all over and having trouble finding much information on the subject !

I have and that’s the recipe I am looking at. I am wondering about the “feasibility” of using really good milk but not raw, since that is what I can get and would be more acceptable to my husband.
The only formula they mention or recommend is the Baby’s Only Organic, which I can find here, BUT it is only recommended for baby over 12 months…….. I’d love to hear if anyone has supplemented with it under 12 months?
At this point I am just looking to supplement, 1-2 feeds a day, probably right after he has nursed.

He says if baby is getting breastmilk as well, a good whole milk could be introduced after 6 months….. so I am wondering too if I could just offer a little cup or 2 of good milk and not mix up the formula……..

What if you supplement with things like liver pate and egg yolks softly cooked and other soft nutrient-dense foods? Just a thought. You’ve probably read all about that in your reading, too.
I am doing that as well, but since he is so young and new to eating “food”, he really isn’t eating a whole lot, it’s more about just introducing new tastes and textures at this point. Over the next couple months I am hoping that increases and he is able to get more nutrients from those sources.
But I am feeling like he is needing it, so I am trying to decide WHAT supplement I am most comfortable with, what my options are and doing that.
The reason we are needing to supplement is I am 12 weeks pregnant and I know my milk supply is dropping and will continue to do so. He is acting as if he is not satisfied and very fussy, so I know he is needing some kind of supplement, it’s not my first choice

My goal last month was to finally make beef stock. And make stock, I did! Lots and lots. So that’s a big check in the box. This month, I will shred cheese for the freezer, make a ton of pizza sauce and do crispy nuts.
Entering into the world of sourdough here. I successfully made sourdough whole wheat tortillas. Successful means the kids seemed to like it! I will try sourdough crackers this month. They’ll probably scarf those up since I haven’t bought crackers in the last 6 months.
I am planning my garden. I got an herb kit for Christmas and have started some parsley seeds. I have so many seeds to start, but I’m afraid I will get them mixed up. So you’re still having winter, Kelly? It’s starting to feel a little like spring here. I have bulbs coming up, which always makes me happy.
I am trying a whey soda and Jenny’s fermented potatoes. They are still on the counter right now.
Also planning a list of snack foods for DS who is coming home for spring break soon. This is always a challenge since he doesn’t like any of it.
I think it’s cool that you are going to school to teach the kids about nutrition. I can’t wait to hear about it.

Since we had a new baby last week, my goal for March is mainly to stay somewhat on track with healthy eating as we work into our new schedule. Fortunately I made a lot of stuff ahead of time and put it in the freezer, so it shouldn’t be too difficult.
Oh, and we plan to put our garden in, once my husband gets a tiller. Yay!
I’m going to work on a great cracker recipe!
