Organic Barbecue Sauce Recipe

Author: Kelly the Kitchen Kop

  • About 1/4 cup palm sugar raw honey, molasses or maple syrup. (Note, if using a liquid sweetener, your sauce may not be as thick, but will taste just as great.)
  • Juice from 2 organic lemons OR 2 Tablespoons raw apple cider vinegar or use a little of both
  • 1 24 ounce bottle of organic ketchup
  • 2 Tablespoons mustard
  • 1/2 teaspoons onion powder
  • 3 Tablespoons fermented soy sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon Sea salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • Update: I recently bought some liquid smoke with an ingredient label that looked pretty OK!, and used 1/8 teaspoon – start out small like that and you can always add more if you like the taste. I thought it was good! (Note that a reader in the comments said she saw something about this and does not recommend it.)

  • Mix together in a saucepan and simmer for 5-10 minutes.  This makes a lot of sauce, you may want to halve the recipe. Mix it up well, do lots of taste testing and play around with it until you like it. The recipe isn't exact, play with it and see how you like it!
