Whether your 2011 goals include weight loss or not, almost all of us have other wellness goals to reach as well. Today I’m hoping you'll share your non-weight related wellness goals with us! Are your goals in one of the following categories, or are there some that I missed?
- Do you need to get more sleep? Ready to find ways to eliminate or lower your stress levels? Are you like most of us in that you need to get more consistent with your exercise habits? Do you need to get rid of the soda pop addiction in your life? In upcoming posts over the next three weeks we’ll discuss much more about all of these!
- Do you need to lower your caffeine intake? Consider joining me on Kristen’s Caffeine-Free 30 Day Challenge! Like Kristen, I’m not addicted to coffee (no symptoms when I don’t have it, and I don’t drink it every day), but I sure do love the stuff, and I only like it black, thankyouverymuch. Since Saturday I’ve been drinking tea or good quality decaf instead, but it’s just not the same. It tastes empty or something, is it all in my head? One of her suggestions for a substitute, “Dandy Blend”, isn’t bad, as long as you haven’t had the real thing just beforehand. As a matter of fact, I prefer that to decaf coffee, so I think I’ll go get more. She had another suggestion: Teeccino, but when I tried it, it didn’t do it for me at all. (I’ve never tried her third suggestion, “Roastaroma”, have you?)
- Do you need to eat more Real Food? (Check out the Real Food Ingredient Guide for help in that area.) For one thing, consider eating more cultured vegetables, and the ones in today’s giveaway are amazing. As a matter of fact, my first taste of Caldwell’s fermented carrots at the Wise Traditions conference had me hooked, and since they’re so good for me, I was thrilled that I loved them. Once I tried their other cultured veggies, and my picky palate loved those, too, I was even more thrilled! (My own recipe for fermented carrots are yummy, too, but I still need to try it with the culture starter from Cultures for Health so I’m sure there are enough probiotics in there.)

One of my goals is to LET GO. Relax, lighten up, and stop attempting to control those things out of my control. Already I am feeling such a lightness and unclenching of the big fist in my brain!
Andrea says
I want to eat out less and cook more. Too often I end up tired and hungry and buying cheap tacos which undoubtedly use cheap meat and cheap oils. I now have a slow cooker which is wonderful! I’d like to get better at fixing different kinds of meat, including the still scary organ meats, and making more of my own broths. I have the knowledge, and now just need to develop the new habits.

My goals are to stress less, excercise daily, and go gluten free. The hardest will be reducing stress followed by gluten free. My husband is fine with me going gluten free but it is hard to cook meals he will eat too.
Annie Anderson says
My non-weight-loss goal is to get my back fixed! I’ve got a bad disk and after 13 years of trying every alternative possible, it’s finally time to just do surgery – a spinal fusion and decompression on L5/S1 (that’s lumbar/lower back). So my goal is to do the surgery (hopefully in February, I find out next week for certain) and be fully recovered by year’s end. 😉

My non-weight related wellness goal for 2011 is to balance my hormones by preparing more NT real foods.
WordVixen says
I want my hormones to balance out and would like to get pregnant. But if not that much, it would be nice to actually achieve natural periods instead of having to take toxic pills to get one. Ugh! It would be nice too, to have my face clear up. 🙂

Hi Kelly. I’d love to get pregnant again this year. LOL. Is that a wellness goal? I think it is. I’ll be doing my best to do it healthy. The Brewer pregnancy diet? That’s what I did last time and it worked well.
shannon says
Hi Kelly. I think Dr. Brewer was a “real” foodie before his time. He recommended during pregnancy leafy greens daily, lots of protein, especially through eggs, meats and healthy fats. Whole grains, optional liver once a week. If I only ate as he suggested, I would not have room for anything unhealthy!

Non-weight loss goals:
Eat more real food. Reduce sugar and grains. My husband is on a diet for the next 6 months that allows no grain flour or sugars of any kind! Guess who volunteered to be moral support and do it with him! That will definitely reduce the sugar and grains 🙂 the real test will come after that-hopefully I will feel so much better that I will limit the grains and sugars.

My first goal is to pick back up with my physical therapy after a nkee scope. I stopped and it hurts again. I am also cutting out refined sugar, and going caffeine free…but adding kombucha, vitamins, and probiotics. Going to be incorporating more fresh veggies and visiting my farmer’s market a LOT more! I’ve lost LOTS of hair lately, so hoping that will get better too. Re-prioritized life to have more time with my family too! Going to be a GREAT year!!

My non-weight related wellness goal for 2011 is to put my entire family on the GAPS diet and survive! Getting nervous about the die-off!
Anna says
I’m working on repairing some damage to my adrenals. This includes getting rid of caffeine (slowly, so I don’t shock my system, which I think would be almost as bad as just keeping it around), getting more sleep, eating on a good schedule, taking some supplements, and reducing stress as much as possible (since it’s mostly outside influences, this is the tough one). My second goal is to get rid of my wheat “addiction” since I know I need to eat gluten-free but I’m having a very hard time giving it up again after challenging my elimination diet!

this year I want to do more fermenting of veggies and I did a lot of water kefir last year but I want to add kombucha to my list of things to make. I have dabbled in sourdough but haven’t mastered it, no one in my house likes the sour taste, so I am still hoping to work on that this year. more walking and other exercise that is another goal. thanks for all the inspiration!

I’ve been on narcotic pain medication for over 3 years (for stomach pain that no doctor has been able to diagnose the cause of). I think it’s safe to say that I’m dependent on it at this point. My biggest goal this year is to get 100% off the pain meds for good.
KitchenKop says
Jennifer, when you’re off the pain meds, consider doing the GAPS Diet to heal your stomach issues for good! It’s not easy, but you can do it. I will pray for you, please email me and let me know how you’re doing!
Kelly
Jennifer says
Thanks Kelly. I say “stomach” pain but it’s actually “lower right abdomen” (essentially where my right ovary is) pain. I’m actually doing GAPS now; it helps me keep my focus and stay sane with the narcotic side effects. Thank you for your prayers! I appreciate them. 🙂

One of my goals is to actually take a vacation this summer and take our dog along. Oh, does this count? Health related, as I mentioned before, I want to get my husband off statins. I need to get my body temp up. I was doing that diet for 1 week and when I saw the weight gain I freaked out. So I don’t know about that. I find when I try to solve these problems It makes me more anxious. Like for instance, I was taking amino acids to try to sleep better. Instead I woke up more. Now that I’m not (I keep forgetting to take them, not in the habit of taking pills/capsules) I am sleeping better. Still wake up once or twice, but less anxious about it. Now after reading about the carbs I realize we have been eating a lot of carbs. And did I just read that going low carb can cause diabetes? Husband’s dr told him to go on a low carb diet or he will become diabetic? So right now I’m not sure what to do about that.
KitchenKop says
In this case I would totally listen to your husband’s doctor on the low-carb recommendation. Once you are also limiting your carb consumption, I’ll bet you’ll feel better, too. Most do, not all, but most. They also go off a lot of medications.
Read the other new post today that is about low-carb diets, hope that helps!
Linda says
I think that is what I will have to do since I don’t know what else to try. I don’t want to do anything that will screw him up more. Thanks, Kelly.

My goal is to plant and grow some of our own herbs and vegetables this year. I would also like to try making more fermented foods, and be able to make a decent sourdough bread. I was doing pretty good with the bread till the holidays hit.
Jenny says
I would like to do more research on GAPS or find a good blog that would help step by step, I do not have the books or ebooks because I am on a very limited disability budget and I get overwhelmed easily with pain and fatigue…I would like to have at least 30 days of menu planning for GAPS before I decide to start…that is my main health goal besides complete healing of course!
Holly says
My goal is no fast food! I try to only buy and cook real food for my family, but I’ve been known to sneak off by myself at night while pregnant… and we just found out we’re expecting our 4th 🙂 Hopefully I can beat those cravings for the food I used to eat!

I also want to see if I can get my knees to heal and stop hurting everytime I squat or use the stairs.
And energy–I want to get outside and run around with the kids without gasping for breath.

My goal is to get back to yoga. It tones my body and increases flexibility. The meditation and the relaxation that comes with it, is such a bonus and makes me forget I’m working out at all. It just makes me feel stronger – mind, body and soul. My goal is 1 hour a day, at least 3 days a week (to begin with).
Elaine says
My goal (aside from weight loss) is to just be healthier from the inside out!!! I am so sick and tired of feeling crappy and fighting my body to make it work. I’ve got a huge learning curve ahead of me, but hopefully I can stay on track!
Kristi says
My goal is related to weight loss, but it’s the means to get there. My goal is to begin some of the harder and more time consuming cooking processes. We’ve already gone local and grass fed and I cook all meals without boxes and make bread. But I want to try actually soaking the grains, making whey and cream and butter, making yogurt, using bone broths, and other NT ways of cooking.

A couple of my goals this new year is to remember to take my fermented cod liver oil more often and to completely eliminate any caffeine in my life forever. I just read “caffeine blues”, recommended by Cheeseslave and it scared me silly! I had pretty much quit drinking coffee but would occasionally indulge and so far after nearly a month of staying completely away, I’ve not had a single puking headache! This year we are attempting to raise or grow about 98% of our own food. I will not be buying anything from the grocery store that I can make myself. This way, I know that almost every bit of my food will be REAL FOOD, organic and prepared by my own hands and labor. Of course I still need to purchase things like salt, maple syrup, etc. but that is where I am headed.

My big non weight related goal is to get more sleep! (I say as I woke up after 3 hours sleep and can’t get back to bed!). The kids go back to school on Wednesday so I want to start going to bed around 9pm so I can get up at 6am. I seem to need more sleep than I used to.
Another is exercise. I am going to start at 10 minutes a day and work myself up due to my health issues.
