- Is anyone there? Or are you all relaxing and doing Memorial Day stuff today? (Did you know Kent was in the Marines? I’m so thankful to all those in the military who keep us safe, and for their families who sacrifice for us.)
- Kent got our garden in! He grew up helping in his Mom’s garden every year, so it comes natural to him. Good thing, because I’m a gardening ditz. Kent started some seeds in the house at the end of March and one day I thought I’d get them some sunshine on the deck…and then forgot about them for the rest of the day. They were all shriveled up and only about half of them came back, or so I thought – they never grew much after that. Oops… sorry honey. He can’t wait to have me help out in the garden, too.
- We bought some organic plants to replace the ones I baked, and now we wonder why we didn’t just do that in the first place…? They’re not even that expensive. (Have you seen my other gardening post? It’s full of helpful hints in the comments.)
- Want to read some juicy comments that have been flying recently? Go to this Canola Oil post.
- This is my only post today so that we can focus on this (oh OK, also because we were at a soccer tournament all weekend): I need some help with the snakes around here! Last year one crawled onto our patio, THROUGH our screen slider (it was part way open) and out the other side, thank God the glass door was shut and locked, but I didn’t know they could DO that!!! Last week one was in our GARAGE, come ON, do they know I don’t like them, or WHAT?! Any suggestions? Why am I boring you with this on my health and nutrition blog? Well I won’t be able to help in the garden and blog about my nutritious produce if I can’t step outside the door. (And we all know Kent needs my help in the garden.) And I won’t need to worry about good health anymore at all if I see a snake near my house again. My fear is that they’ll get in the house somehow – and don’t try to reassure me by saying how rare that would be, because how many snakes have you seen crawling through a screen slider? (UPDATE: Another reader told me what they found that WORKS for a natural snake repellent!)
Have a great week!

Liz, your new puppy is so cute! If you haven’t seen any snakes down there, I may have to get a puppy after all…

Much thanks to your DH and all others who serve/d in our Armed Forces. (My Dad was also a Marine; Mother was in the Air Force; both Korean Era veterans. DH’s Dad was Army Air Corps, WWII.) I spent Memorial Day busy with our local observance/celebration of veterans and those who made the supreme sacrifice (I know that sounds trite; we LOVE our soldiers). We have ceremonies in each cemetery, the Veteran’s Monuments (5); a huge parade, and a special memorial celebration/concert after the parade. It’s a great day!

Girl — I bet I can top you on the fear of snakes. I was afraid to open your post because I feared there might be a picture of one of those slithery things! The slider and garage stories are seriously freaking me out! We just got a dog though, so perhaps I’m safe?!

Hi Lisa,
Thank you so much for sharing that – it’s the kind of thing we need to shout from the rooftops! 🙂

Kelly,
I have to tell you just how wonderful the folks at Green Pastures are. I purchased two bottles of FCLO from them a while ago and had a really hard time getting the stuff down; honestly, it just grossed me out! I contacted Lisa over there and she said I could send my unopened bottle and she would send me TWO bottles of capsules. Heres the MOST impressive part. They sent me the two bottles before they even got my return. They didn’t even ask me for a cent for shipping, etc. WOW. This is a company that believes in customer service. I’m so glad you recommend these wonderful people. I hope EVERYONE buys from them. They won’t be sorry.
Have a wonderful evening!

Bob & Ann, thanks for the kind reassurances…NOT! I can’t move, so FINE, I know I have to get over this somehow………I just don’t want one in my house! And by the way, Nate, my local HERO, got that one out of my garage for me the other day. I love that kid.
LN, an owl statue…seriously? Might that work??? I just asked Kent to get me an owl statue, I won’t tell you what he said. He did sprinkle some “snake away” stuff for me around the perimeter of the house earlier today. He didn’t use enough, though, so I added to it a bit. It smells like moth balls, supposedly they don’t like that.
Jeff, I know, this is so fun! I’ve never been able to step out my door and get food for dinner, SO exciting! The only bummer is knowing how quickly the season goes…
Kyle, I’m thinking of getting a dog. Thanks for the idea! I’ll try to think of snakes as cute…as long as they’re not in my HOUSE! (But I guess I already mentioned that once or twice…)
Kyle says
So there’s no convincing you that snakes aren’t that bad? I think little ones a kind of cute, right? They’re also afraid of you. You’re a lot bigger than them 🙂
Maybe if you got a dog, it would scare them away. I love my dog.

Kelly, I am so amazed at how well our garden is doing! Still not time to pick much, but it is growing like crazy… and it’s all organic! We picked one zucchini yesterday. Char also clipped some swiss chard this morning. Gardening is fun! I can’t wait till my creole tomatoes come in…

Instant snake control: find yourself a red-tailed hawk to adopt. No, wait, that’s Oregon. Probably wouldn’t work so well in Michigan. Um, an owl statue maybe?

You sound just like my relatives in Michigan. I lived in Florida when I was a kid and anytime my relative would visit they freaked anytime they saw the local wildlife. Be glad the snakes are harmless, in Florida they aren’t. Besides they eat rodents and for that I am thankfull.

Kelly, you live next to a wooded area which includes a swamp and a pond! I’m afraid you’re stuck with the snakes…. be thankful you’re in Michigan with small, nonpoisonous snakes and not down South or out West where the snakes are BIG! As creepy as they are, they really are harmless. And think of all the other creepy, nasty things they’re eating and getting rid of for you! If you get one in the house, there’s an army of boys in the neighborhood ready to snap into action and take care of it for you! They’ll be alerted by your shrieks of terror.
