Good morning readers! I've been busy putting the final touches on my talk for next weekend's regional WAPF conference (near Detroit), so just as everything else around here goes lately, this will be straight to the point! Here's what I've found for you this week:
- Get Sarah Pope's BRAND NEW book for your Kindle: Get Your Fats Straight. Cute title, huh? (No Kindle? Get a free reader for your phone, tablet or computer by clicking here.)
- Are hand sanitizers anyone else's pet-peeve? It drives me crazy how they're everywhere. How about just washing your hands?! Melissa says it well in this post, “What about hand santizers?” (BTW, she's on maternity leave after having her 11th, or is it 12th?, baby this week! Congrats Melissa!)
- Local readers, don't forget that our “3rd Tuesday” local WAPF chapter meeting is this week. Get all the details on the topic, Urban Homesteading, as well as info on place and time here.
- My blogging friend, Kimi, wrote a post last week that you'll love: Eating for Health Isn't Always Simple. “What?! You mean that there isn’t a perfect diet that will work equally well for everyone in the world? How refreshing! It explains so much to me. It has been more and more clear to me that many of us thrive on different diets. Perhaps what our ancestors ate plays a large role here. Sometimes different circumstances (such as exposure to antibiotics at an early age, or exposure to different chemicals) can throw things out of whack too, making some “healthy” foods indigestible for you personally. Whatever the reason, it just seems like there is a wide variance to what type of diet people thrive on.” Did I tell you about her new recipe book yet, Ladled? It's loaded with nourishing recipes and beautiful pictures!
- Kimberly Hartke had a couple of good posts last week that I thought you'd like.
- The first one is a guest post by a man everyone loves, Stanley Fishman: Real Food vs. Industrial Food. Here's an excerpt: “The real food movement has become a threat to industrial food producers. People are realizing that real food is much better. Industrial food manufacturers are trying to demonize real food and the people who eat it.”
- The other one is: Dairy Industry Claims “Low Calorie” Milks Are Not “Attractive” to Children. “The new USDA dietary guidelines are really behind all this. As state and federal programs start implementing the guidelines, there is pressure on institutions like schools and hospitals to move toward reducing calories in their menu ingredients. Thus, the push for manufacturers and food processors to replace food based sugars with substitutes like aspartame and sucralose.”
- Lastly, I'll do my weekly Facebook page recap – I've been posting there more lately (I'm finally getting into it a little bit, it's been very difficult for me because I've got too much REAL life stuff going on around here!), so I'll just pick a few highlights, but be sure to follow me if you want to see the cool stuff I've been finding to share, including some funny pictures – those always go over the best. 🙂
- Do hospitals really gouge people this much?
- Can you eat healthy food at Disney World?
- More reasons to avoid soy products, the magical fruit…
- Read about different types of allergy testing.
- This week I made my homemade barbecue sauce for pulled pork, and I made cinnamon rolls yesterday instead of getting them at the coffee shop when the kids asked. 🙂 We also made these double cheese potato boats. Yummyness! Did you make anything extra tasty recently?
Beth says
I watched the food coloring video and then all of my children watched it. Thanks. My oldest came into the kitchen saying something like, “Our mac and cheese just has mac…(dramatic pause) and cheese! Who cares if it’s not yellow?” 🙂
