Surely you know who Joel Salatin is, if not, check out the trailer for this popular film he was featured in. Recently he asked this question…
“If you — Mom — don’t start doing something now, who will? Which malady or sickness will finally make you pay attention?”
Those were his words in the foreword he wrote for my friend, Kristen's new book (you can pre-order now at this link):
Beautiful Babies:
Nutrition for Fertility, Pregnancy, Breast-feeding, and Baby's First Foods
How many do you know who struggle with diabetes? Obesity? Cancer?
How many of them are kids?
In the foreword he goes on to say…
“This is a mom book. It’s written by a mom for moms. One heart to another. It’s a take charge thing. It’s not about waiting for the American Heart Association to come around. It’s not about waiting for the government to adjust healthy American dietary guidelines. It has nothing to do with recommendations from the American Medical Association, or what your insurance company will cover. Have you ever seen a mother hen fight for her chicks? She’ll fight to the death to keep the hawk away. She’ll fight a snake, a dog. Ever watch a cow defend her calf against a coyote? She’ll die of exhaustion before letting a predator attack her calf. Kristen exhibits that spirit. Goodness, too many moms today have lost their protective instinct. They’ve formed alliances with the Coyote Association. Tragically, they don’t think they’re strong enough to fight the coyotes.”
The message in Kristen's book is so powerful, that it must get out. What we see happening all around us has to stop. I hope you'll share this post with anyone you know who doesn't have kids yet, who may be pregnant now, or anyone who has children or grandchildren!

AAAAAAAHHHH !!!!!
I ordered this book today and enrolled in the class as FAST as I could !!!!!
I found out today that I AM PREGNENT !!! And it’s my 41st birthday !!!!
My husband and 2 kids (ages 8 and 12) are excited of course, but it was not really on the radar!
THIS brings me to my question:
Does Kristen have a blog ????
Where can I get info, especially on the morning sickness part 🙁
I pre-ordered the book but it won’t arrive for at least a week and I need info NOW !
🙂
Thank you for sharing in my little “freak-out” break !
You may now all resume your regular programming !!!

41 is young, no worries!
I’m pretty sure the morning sickness info is in the class you signed up for!
Plus here’s her blog: http://www.foodrenegade.com.
Now go take your FCLO and eat some butter! 🙂

YAY! I got the link. It all looks really good. And even though I know a few things about traditional foods, it covers a LOT more than that — everything mom needs to know! 🙂
I’ve been meaning to ask. . . .I have trouble getting FCLO here locally but I have been taking Nordic Naturals regular cod liver oil. Can you suggest a good (decent tasting) FCLO for me Kelly ?
KitchenKop says
I forgot where you live? I’m curious why you can’t get the FCLO locally?

Joel Salatin is none other than the best thing in America.

I wish this book had been written before I conceived my 5 babies! I remember trying to find sources that would tell me what to and what not to eat during pregnancy to no avail. At this point, it is good to get the word out! Thanks, Kelly!

This is why, no matter how tired I am at the end of a work day, I will spend the whole night in the kitchen if I have to to give my kids the nutrition I believe will benefit them most. Every time we sit down to eat, I know I am doing the best I can to give them an advantage health-wise.

I know just what you mean!! I work nonstop every night from about 6pm through 9pm, reheating/cooking dinner, feeding the kids and prepping snacks/lunches for the next day for all 3 of us (homework and showers are thrown in there, too). I spend most of my weekend on the kitchen, too (I work outside the home). Every time I start complaining about it, I stop and think about school lunches. I then go back to the kitchen LOL. I have simply accepted the fact that even with store-bought deli meat, premade snacks (dry raisins, Annie’s bunnies, sweet potato chips, etc.) it is still miles better than school lunch. Just the fact that my kids get a fresh fruit every day is better than the school!! I try to pack avocado or sauerkraut or fresh veggies when I can, too. I make them homemade pizza or calzone almost every week. Again, not all is made from scratch, but when it’s not, it’s still free from soy, HFCS, preservatives, colors, etc.

A coyote was literally eyeing our puppy at close range for an early morning snack the other morning so this is a very vivid image for me!
I appreciate the encouragement to make the change and not wait for the coyotes to change. I’ve found myself compromising more and more in my mind lately because I’m just so t-i-r-e-d. Thanks for reminding me that the extra work is worth it and really, it’s not a choice if I want to heal and keep my children healthy.
If I’ll scare away coyotes to protect our puppy, shouldn’t I be even more ready to protect my children??

I have a sister with one child on the autism spectrum and one child with adhd that takes ritalin to be able to sit through school. I bought her the GAPS books and she said it was just too much of a diet change to make. It hurts to see my nieces being raised that way. Needles to say, it has strained our relationship. Now I’m the “judgmental” sister. I’m not a rude, tactless kind of person, mind you. And with homeschooling too, I’ve found that often times it’s not enough to live and let live, many people are just plain offended by another opinion that says, “you could be doing much more to help your children, even if you never say it out loud, but merely express it with your lifestyle.

“They’ve formed alliances with the Coyote Association.”
Hah, I love that analogy!

I don’t know if they’re formed an alliance with the coyotes, or if the coyotes have coerced them into carrying out their (the coyote’s) will.
