HELP!

Hands down, my biggest ‘mom’ struggle lately, is managing 5 children (ages 5-18) with a TV, Wii and 2 internet screens. My husband and I have not settled on any sort of system to help structure and limit their usage. (My 18 year old is good about managing her own time and productivity).

Individually, it doesn’t seem a big deal. But all together, it seems mayhem in the afternoons and evenings…and the focus is, “I want to use that screen!” We have said an hour a day is plenty. But then American Idol comes on….and not everyone wants to watch TV.

Any moms of many have some suggestions? Our biggest problem is that when we allow, say, 1 or 2 hours per evening (after school, chores, and doing something other than sitting!) for internet and TV time…..the kids will watch each other…then say ‘they’ didn’t have a turn….

I hate being the police all the time. : P Charts are not my strong point, either. It is the selfish attitudes that bother me, (everyone gravitating to ‘their own’ show, game or internet time.) Chores are rushed though, with poor attitudes, so that they can maximize their screen time. It almost has become an idol in our home…..(and we cannot eliminate them, my dh says.)

I’ve noticed that our kids are NOT terribly motivated to call a friend, join a team, go outdoors….when they can plop down and watch a show (on the web) or FaceBook someone, instead. So, we MUST limit it.

What do you do at your house?

I wish I had some good suggestions, but here we’re basically policing all the time, too, and it gets old. I think that we *have* to do the tough thing, which is set boundaries, and then stick to them, since it’s our job to teach them self-discipline. It stinks, though!

Hi Kim,
I loooooove the half-gallon Ball glass jars, then buy plastic lids (wide-mouth) to use with them. We special ordered them at our local hardware. :)

I bought an Aerogarden to grow my own herbs. Know anything about this product? I’m just getting educated about eating healthy. Have not made any changes to my family’s eating habits. After visiting your site sometime around Christmas, the only the thing I’ve done is buy Coconut Oil = ). Getting my feet wet before taking the plunge (scared my family is going to uprise against me).
If there something suspect in the seed pods they sell to go with this machine, I need to return it soon! Thanks!

Christy, I had not heard of an Aerogarden so I looked it up and the only thing that jumped out at me was that plants are grown “without dirt”. Doesn’t sound very natural to me, but as I said, I don’t know anything about it.

Starting with coconut oil is perfect!!!

Hi Kelly!

I’m just starting out on all of this business after a stint at hardcore vegetarianism, so I’m doing some reprogramming. Unfortunately, my husband and I are still at odds over raw milk. ANYWAYS, I have a question about meal ideas for 2-5 year olds. I watch my 2 nieces, as well as my 2 girls during the workweek, and we’ve been stuck in a rut of apples, carrots, sunbutter/spelt/raw honey sandwiches, and water (see comment above about milk!). My girls have a hard time with change. My 4-year-old has quite the tummy thanks to the vegetarian diet. It shouldn’t be hard, but I’m having a difficult time coming up with meal ideas. Can you help or direct me somewhere? Thanks!

Hi Amy,

You are SO on the right track with things! :)

Kids are always tricky, but in time I’ll bet yours will come around since they’re so young. Just keep CALM about it and matter of fact, don’t make any big deals out of anything or they’ll NEVER go for the Real Food. Have the attitude of, “You don’t want any? Cool, more for me.” Then just let it go. (It’s so hard, though, I know!) Be careful not to have the junk around or they’ll want that instead of the good stuff. (All those fake colors in junk food are appealing to their little eyes.)

Have you seen these snack ideas?
