If I get very little response to this post, I'll know you're all still off celebrating Christmas or the New Year, but I hope some of you will take a couple minutes and help me by commenting with your answers to the questions below! PLEEEEASE? I promise I won't ask you to do anything again for a while! Even if you've never commented before, I would really appreciate it if you would speak up on this one.

Janet, you’re a doll. Isn’t that sad, but true about how most just go for the cheapest food they can find – it’s all about taste and cost.
All of you I haven’t responded to individually, I’m sorry, but I read every one and am thankful for your kind words and input!
Janet W says
Hi, Kelly,
You are a sanity saver. I have known about Weston Price/Sally Fallon etc. for several years now. In 2008 i went completely organic. But no one I know gets it, they think I’m on some weird diet. I was searching the web for *anything* that would understand what I meant about raw milk, grass fed beef, pastured eggs, cod liver oil. Not only did I find your site, but now I’ve found all the sites you link to and mention. Hurrah! I’m not some kook (ok, maybe I am, but there apparently are lots and lots of us out there).
* How & When did you find the blog? Answered above
* Which post did you enjoy reading the most? All of them, the blog is food for my soul
* Which post did you find most helpful/informative? Everything I’ve read so far, even if I already know about it.
* Which post most inspired you to change something in your life? I pretty much had made all the changes before I read your blog. Fine tuning things now, and your info on grains is helping
* Which post most inspired you to tell others about the blog? Well, I’ll mention it to my mother, who gets it a little, but no one I know would even consider eating this way. Too many people think that the best way to save money is to buy the *cheapest* food possible and would not get that cheap food = high doctor bills.
* What topics are you curious about for 2009? Maybe something on learning to listen to your body. I tend to make too many rules for myself and it’s just not necessary. Otherwise, just PLEEEEASE keep on writing about all this lovely food that is in the world.
Sorry this is long, but seriously, it’s an incredible blog. ;>D

Hi Sue,
Isn’t that wild to think about? Yes, you and Lyn & Amy D. and others were the ones who convinced me to change my very first thing: our peanut butter! (Back then the all natural stuff was still hard and you could barely stir it, thankfully the organic stuff is yummy now.) Oh, how far we’ve all come, but it has been a SLOW process, so for those of you just beginning, it’s OK, take a breath and start with the Rookie Tips!
I’m thankful for you and others who got my wheels turning, but how I wish my head wasn’t so hard and that it had been sooner! All the years I fed our teenager junk before I knew better makes me sick to think about! All any of us can do is go forward from here, and pray God takes care of the rest. 🙂
Thanks Sue!

Well, Kelly, you might remember sitting around your living room at our Bible Study Christmas party 12/07, and telling us all about your new blog that you were putting together that would start up on 1/08. I was one of your first readers, and very excited for you and your venture. You may also remember about 8-10 years ago talking with me on the phone as I explained to you the dangers of high fructose corn syrup and trans fatty acids that were in your peanut butter! I think your little (I mean gigantic) wheels just started spinning as you were introduced to things you had never heard of before. And then there’s the time we sat at Anne S.’s kitchen table about 5-6 years ago with Lyn listening to Anne’s presentation for an upcoming Nourishing Traditions meeting. She was explaining the difference between store-bought eggs and local farm-raised ones, as well as “Blue Bottle Medicine (AKA Blue Ice cod liver oil), and she proceeded to show us how her little 2 year old ate it right off the spoon.”Ugh!!”, we thought, and wondered just how far off the deep end Anne had gone. Well here we are today, and you are teaching me things all the time. One of the many things I love about you is that you love to FIND ANSWERS, whether it is of faith or food! And I really appreciate your humble human side that you show all the time at your site.
I think the posts I have appreciated the most are those that have citings from medical magazines or mainstream media that allow me to show those family members who don’t believe me on many topics that it isn’t just the minority kooks out there who agree with this stuff. I so much appreciate your recipes, and have made several of them. Before I wrote my post on the natural mothering, I loved yours on the topic when Matthew was an infant.
As far as changes in my (and my family’s) life, I am more convicted that juice is dangerous, and we are cutting way down on cereal consumption, among other things.
Thanks so much for this helpful site and ALL you do. You are helping many people out there!
God bless you!

kelly,
i ran across your blog sometime mid 2008 google searching for nutrition related topics. i have enjoyed too many posts to pick a favorite, although i tend to like the “food” ones most, but you certainly have me interested in a Bosch as well! i have added coconut oil, cod liver oil and even bought a popcorn popper as results of your posts. i appreciate your links (i.e. matt) and the research you save me on purchasing the best deals. i’m very excited about the wednesday low carb thing. how about ketosis and intermittent fasting for weight maintenance. i still haven’t hit the “on” button as far as exercise goes either… maybe some more testimonials, or stories to inspire as we continually fight this battle with the SAD. Substitues, tricks and tips for switching over or modifying favorite food items are always a welcome read.
i appreciate the content on your site. i don’t have spare time to dig thru a bunch of junk and you are always right on for me. keep up the good work. i’ve told my husband many times ” I love this girl!” God Bless and best wishes for 2009

Dear Kelly,
I started reading this blog sometime last spring. Your neighbor Holly told me about it. One of the changes I adopted was adding Perfect Food to my daily routine. (Yes, I already took Green Pastures fish oil…my husbands favorite!) I read faithfully and love the look of your NEW site.
Thanks for sharing your health and diet info!
Happy 2009!

Kel, the new website looks great. It is much easier to navigate and looks fantastic. The information, as usual, is priceless. You know why I love your site … you are the KOP … and a damn good one at that. Thanks for all you do. Good luck in 2009. I know I will use your site as a resource for my family and me.

Hi, Kel!
It is so inspiring to read all these comments! I found myself actually tearing up a couple of times thinking about how much you are helping people.
# How & When did you find the blog?
No idea — we could look it up (I think you did recently but I forgot). It was about a year ago. I probably found you on the Yahoo DNT list.
# Which post did you enjoy reading the most?
Impossible to say. I have so many favorites. If I had to name one, I would say the interview with Kent where he calls you bossy. I can relate! Plus it was nice to see a husband who is so on board.
# Which post did you find most helpful/informative?
Definitely your well-researched posts on finding the best deals on coconut oil, kitchen gadgets, bread baking, etc.
# Which post most inspired you to change something in your life?
Even though I didn’t go with a Bosch and got a KItchenAid instead, your posts on bread baking really inspired me. I can’t wait to get home from my holiday trip to start sprouting and grinding flour and baking my own bread, as well as pizza dough, pie and tart crusts, and cookies and brownies.
# Which post most inspired you to tell others about the blog?
I’m always linking back to you because you post so much good stuff!
# What topics are you curious about for 2009?

Kathy, the coconut kefir and water kefir posts may be a while, because first you’d have to tell me what they ARE! lol – I’ve never heard of them, sorry!! I am working on kefir soda right now, though! 🙂
Margie, how COOL about your possible move to the country! You’ll have to keep us up on all that, so the rest of us can “live through you”! I answered your CLO question at the fermented CLO post. 🙂
This has been fun reading everyone’s answers, keep ’em coming, guys! You’re giving me good ideas, and/or solidifying some ideas I had already started thinking about.

I found this site because I was looking for recipes for my new bosch mixer….. then I was searching for help with menorrhagia and amazingly found connections back to your site. Looks like I’ve found a gold mine! I am curious as to how much more powerful the fermented cod liver oil is and whether we need to be careful if we are thinking of taking the 60,000 to 90,000 units as recommended in the Weston A Price site? I put this question eslewhere but thought I’d put it here to make sure it’s seen. Thanks. (By the way our family is seriously thinking of moving out of surburbia to the country where we can raise our own food and live a healthier lifestyle, thanks to some of the things we’ve read on your site).

I think I first heard about you through my local WAP chapter in Grand Rapids. I enjoyed the Komboucha post and learned the most from it. I tell other who are new to health or are just starting the health journey. However, when I forward your post I think they are confused that they have to click to go to the full post. Perhaps if there was a way to forward the post more basically (sorry their probably is an easy way to do this and I am just not doing it correctly). Lastly, I would like to see a post on coconut kefir and water kefir demonstations. Thanks for all the late nights your working for us!! Kathy

I’m a new reader. I subbed the feed last week. I believe Carrie from Natural Moms provided your link.
In an effort to overhaul our eating and save a lot of money, our family cut out 95% of our meat consumption. Now, nearly a year later, after doing more research, we’re ready to make some more changes with how we eat. So, I’m very curious about the Traditional Foods movement.
Sorry I didn’t really answer your questions 🙂 I’m not able yet, but I hope to be able to next January.

*How & When did you find the blog? -DiscussingNT Yahoo group
*Which post did you enjoy reading the most? They are all good, I’ve never seen a “weak” post.
*Which post did you find most helpful/informative? – I really like the links to specific recipe categories like “Breakfast Foods” (Link is doesn’t work right now I think).
*Which post most inspired you to change something in your life? ——I was already convinced…. but you have a great tone of helpfulness so that if I were a vegan, for example, I’d keep reading. Somehow you don’t have a controversial tone even when what your saying is considered difficult.
*Which post most inspired you to tell others about the blog? —The general overall information. I think that your strength is that when you discuss something in detail, you think of your beginning readers and give a link for beginners. That is tremendously helpful, so people at every level of understanding can read every post. I’d say you have mastered this technique.
*What topics are you curious about for 2009?—I’d like to see a list of grocery store misinformation like the ingredient list for crisco saying 0 trans fat when we know it has hydroginated fats and that it’s misleading because of the amount/serving. Stuff like that I’m so curious about since I try to help people shop better before they are completely into traditional cooking. Also, what does no hormones added actually mean in meat?
For people new to traditional cooking, I recommend your blog and Nina Plancks: Real Food: What to Eat and Why. Nourishing Traditions is for real enthusiasts and it’s too much too fast for some people…..thus your blog. Thank-you for all you do!

I found your blog through Urban Homemaker. You had been in one of her phone seminars and posted your notes from that seminar on your website. It was early in 2008, and I am not certain which phone seminar it was, but it was very helpful to me! I was hooked from then on.
It’s hard to say which post I have most enjoyed. I did like the post where you contrasted a vegetarian menu with a menu from a recent Weston Price Conference. It was a simple but strong statement! I think the posts that I like the most are the ones that generate feedback from others. I get much help from you and the community of people who read your blog. Your cod liver posts have been very helpful–you have sited good research that backs up the usage of it and also given us information on where to get the best product for the best prices. Just knowing that there is a difference in cod liver oil brands is valuable information, but knowing the best brand and price is wonderful. Right now I have no recommendations for further posts, you are doing a great job. If I think of anything I will let you know though.

# How & When did you find the blog? Like lots of others, through the UrbanHomemaker.com. Which was my favorite site until I came across yours.
# Which post did you enjoy reading the most? I like the recipe ideas. The supplements and the Cod Liver Oil posts. But like someone else said, it is an unfair question.
# Which post did you find most helpful/informative? The cod liver oil. Although I have been spending too much time reading the others. And once again, most all are enough to make me spend more time on the computer than I should!
# Which post most inspired you to change something in your life? I started myself and my family on Cod Liver oil and a probiotic.
# Which post most inspired you to tell others about the blog? I am not sure which one, but I know it talks about changing the way we eat. You just honestly told that you still eat the ‘bad’ stuff at times. And you made it very clear that change takes time and that is okay! I love your honesty. Like the post about having junk at christmas. Sometimes, it just happens.

I don’t remember which blog I found that was linked to yours. I don’t visit the other blog anymore, but I check yours regularly. I think the rookie tips are the most helpful posts on your blog. Recipes, rookie tips, and other suggestions for how to make this lifestyle work are very helpful.

Hi. Hi Kelly,
Generally a lurker, but I’ll comment as a New Year’s gift. 🙂 I think I found your blog through Google Reader, but I’ve been most engaged by your posts on raw milk. For 2009, I’d say keep doing what you’re doing. I very much enjoy your posts.

I am a new reader and loving your blog. Thank you for helping all of us work through our questions, concerns, and needs.
#1 How & When did you find the blog?
I found this blog through the word of my sister in law. She and I are working on keeping our families healthy and just love the helpfulness of your work. She gave me your link in Nov. 2008
#2 Which post did you enjoy reading the most?
There are three so far. The milk, coconut, and cod liver.
#3 Which post did you find most helpful/informative?
The milk post. We have a cow share program and only get 2 gallons of milk a week. That doesn’t cover what our family of seven uses. I have been looking into purchasing store milk to help get us through until the next week. Your post was most helpful. Our store doesn’t have Country Farms milk. What would be another suggestion?
#4 Which post most inspired you to change something in your life?
Your blog was a gift from God. I have been praying about getting myself healthy with foods and was given your blog. I am battling with yeast again. I get this every year (from Oct-Jan). This year was the worst. I have had a slight stuffy nose from the time I had my last cold and sinus and that was in October. Your blog and the words from others all directed me in the same place. Better nutrition and good suppliments.
#5 Which post most inspired you to tell others about the blog?
All of them. I have a few friends like me who are trying to get their healthy up and running the way God intended.
#6 What topics are you curious about for 2009?
Food allergies and how a whole family can eat the same thing. We have a child who gets sick easier because of his food allergies to eggs, wheat, and dairy. I am looking for friendly kids meals that doesn’t have those items in them.

Hmm, I want to say I found you about 7-8 months ago. I have no idea how, though. That was around the time that I discovered Real Food and Nourishing Traditions and The Omnivores Dilemma, so I was doing all kinds of googling. I either found you during a random search or a link from another blog.
I really enjoy your interviews…my favorite was Scott from Modern Forager. That opened up whole new aspect of health and fitness to me.
I love your posts on various products, like cod liver oil and coconut oil. Those have helped me so much. And the recipes you post are fantastic. Basically I love that you do my research for me. 😉
The only thing I can think of for 2009 is I’d like to see more nutritional information as far as vitamins and minerals. Not so much about the vitamins themselves, because that’s available in so many places, but on how to go about planning your menus to make sure you meet all your nutritional requirements. Basically I’d love to see, say, a week’s worth of meal plans and how they break down nutritionally. How to make sure we’re getting the right amounts of everything we need, and in the right ratios (omega6:3, Calcium:Magnesium, Vitamins A:D, etc.). I feel like I have so much information but I still don’t know how to apply it sometimes.

Hi Kelly…
How & When did you find the blog?
I think I’ve been reading regularly since you began a year ago!
Which post did you enjoy reading the most?
I don’t know if there’s one post, but I most appreciate the constant encouragement to “go against the norm”, to followed tried and true traditions of eating, and your realistic perspective.
Which post most inspired you to tell others about the blog?
All the milk posts. Especially about the ultra-pastuerized, organic milks that lack nutrition.
What topics are you curious about for 2009?
Anything you want to tell me about girlfriend… my ears are open. I’m a slow mover, but when we change it’s for good.
Thanks for all your hard work Kelly!

One more thing; advice on how to get the others in the household
on the same page. Kelly, you are so blessed to have a husband who “gets it”. I have a 16 yr. old who thinks I am nuts! I tell her I am the gatekeeper of what comes in to our home and what she eats. She says she doesn’t care about health and I tell her it’s my job to care!
We recently started the “good” milk and of course, she does not like it.
Kelly says
Forgot a couple things:
Michaela, I have a little advice regarding your question. I’d say that if you can afford the extra 70 cents for the softer kleenex, then go for it! Or if you want to be real careful about it, set up a grocery budget, and after you get everything you NEED, then go back and get the extra soft kleenex, or whatever else was on the WANT list. Personally, Kent & I don’t have many wants (we’re boring and don’t want a lot of “toys” – it’ s just more crap to take care of!), so we feel that as long as we’re helping the people God puts in our path, and tithing regularly, and paying our bills, then when a little want comes up now and then, we get it if we can afford it, or we save for it. (The lotion kleenex is too thick for me, but if I did love it, I’d get it!)
Violet, LOTS of low-carb stuff coming in the next week! 🙂

answer to your questions so you won’t be discouraged! 🙂
1)I found your site from a link off of another web page. (can’t remember which one, but I’m sooo glad I found you)!
2)I enjoyed the milk post the most so far. That rocked my world!! I have since found low heat pasturized non-homoginized milk. yeah!
3)Once again, the milk post inspired me the most so far.
4)Ditto; milk post!
5)health and beauty products made w/natural ingredients,
info on where to buy these products. Links and info on cost effective products. (keep on with what you are doing along this line. I have learned so much in the past few months)

*Which post did you enjoy reading the most? Which post did you find most helpful/informative? Which post most inspired you to change something in your life?
The first day I discovered you I spent literally 2 hours+ going through everything you had written for 2 days. I had already started babysteps but you helped turn my health “Titanic” around and I’ll be forever grateful. I can’t point to a particular post because of how I immersed myself (okay, obsessed is a better word) at the beginning. It affirmed my never going for the fake fat or fake sugars but I didn’t realize how “hidden” these were in processed foods.
Some of the most helpful things have been (from my novice stance): Your book recommendations list [got me into EFLF and NT], the link to DNT group, info on trans fats in foods, HFCS, and others in processed foods, soaking, recipes, plastics post, rookie tips – gosh, it’s all helpful!
*Which post most inspired you to tell others about the blog?
The plastics/water bottles post has been a good one for me to share with others because people are vaguely aware of it already and you put so much info in an easy to access format, including the ones you researched and recommend. Many aren’t ready for other changes but I find that many are concerned about plastics but don’t know where to find good info about it.
*What topics are you curious about for 2009?
Hmmm… that’s a tough one because I just follow your lead :). It might be interesting to have posts focused on food for particular things like foods good for your brain, foods good for (whatever, I can’t think of another!). I really appreciate that you do the research and give us the synopsis, lol! Seriously, though – the posts in which you research and find something that you recommend are very helpful. I’m going to be attempting an organic garden this year so any info on that would be helpful to me where I am right now. Sometimes, as a consumer, it’s so hard to wade through all of the labeling tricks. I think you’ve done some of that already.
Thanks so much, Kelly, for all that you do and the time you spend on this.

Good morning, and thanks to everyone who has responded so far!!
Hey Jonathan, as cool as that sounds, I’m going to have to let this be good enough for now. I’m so sick of being on the computer, I can’t add one more thing to figure out today! 🙂 I’ll keep it in mind for the future, though, and I’m sure I’ll be bugging you then – thank you for offering to help!
And good news! My subscribers show up again AND my stats are working again, woohooooooo, now to figure out my email issues…

#6 Oh yes – I remembered one thing: One area that I have NO knowledge of, nor do I know where to start would be: herbs, some of the tri-light home medicines……. I would really like to know more about that, and how to have a basic cupboard stocked so that I don’t have to reach for the “triaminic”!

How did I find your site? I think it was in an Urban Homemaker newsletter, she had linked to the notes you took for a “teleseminar”. I was interested in reading the transcript, so I clicked on the link, and voila! Instant regular KOP reader! 🙂
#2-#4 I can’t really point to one particular post. I read all the updates (and comment a lot probably! 🙂 ), and some are more applicable to me than others….. but I read them all.
#5 I usually point people to your site because they can take the various topics and read a succinct blog entry about it, and tackle things in “bite sized pieces”. Sometimes that’s easier to chew on than a whole book that’s overwhelming. So, I suppose I’d say the format is excellent for getting people started, helping them find their way in the sea of conflicting information.
#6 curious about for 2009? I certainly haven’t arrived, but I’ve been on this path for many years now, so I’ve reaced a point where I’m secure in the “knowledge” phase….. I’m working on the “skills/how to” phase. I think that’s where people get stuck: They are convinced of the correct knowledge, but they don’t know how to translate it into changed practice. The “how-to” and “testimonial” posts are helpful with that. The one thing that I really am beginning to read more about is the “healthy gut flora” stuff. So – more posts on that would be great.

How/when did I find the blog? I followed a link from Catholic Moms, in late October.
Most enjoyable post? The testimonial from your sil(or ds) about her experience with controlled carb lifestyle and weight loss.
Most helpful/informative post? Difficult to choose one: raw milk, coconut oil, grass fed meats, healthy menu ideas…..
Most inspirational? Interviews/notes from WAP/GAP-related posts; testimonials from others who have followed controlled/healthy carb lifestyles.
Tell others? Grass-fed meats and healthy fats posts. I’ve recommended your blog to several other health-minded moms.
2009 Interests? Alternatives to junk food; “converting” the rest of the family to a low-carb lifestyle (rather than low-fat/low-protein plans); how to fit exercise into my schedule; better shopping habits; how to make healthier choices more affordable.

I think i found your blog from Moneysavingmom.
I subscribe to your e-mail newsletter and enjoy that.
Pick one favorite topic? I couldn’t. I am all about saving money, being frugal, using coupons.
What I would like to see: how do you decide when enough is enough being frugal. I found my self agonizing over a box of kleenex purchase, because I wanted the lotion ones($.70 higher than the non lotion) and I had a cold and my nose was sore? When is enough enough? I tried the wants vs needs argument and the want just won out so I spent the extra 70 cents.

Kelly,
I enjoy reading most all of your blogs. I guess anything having to do with bread making would be my favorite. I did change over to real butter instead of Earth Balance. I really do like the taste better now. Even though I don’t have children at home any more I benefit from most everything you write or I pass it one. I agree with Jonathan. You would get better response if your questions were set up the way he suggested.

I think that you should create a poll with open fields so each question can be answered without posting the question..also think that you will get a better response. Let me know if you could use some help in setting it up.

Keep me up to date on the fight for raw milk around the country. I’d also love your advice on candida issues. So many folks I know have them.
