It was exciting to see the great response to my online survey, and learning that many of you are eager to take the next step in your Real Food journey!  (Do you like that logo Kal made me?)

Coming Soon…

Today I wanted to give you a sneak peek at what’s coming soon in my Real Food Online Rookie Class.  As more pieces are finished, I get more excited about the content I’ll be offering, because I really think it will be a big help to all the beginners out there.  How I wish there had been such a class when I was just starting out over six years ago and muddling my way through.

Not Just For Rookies!

Not only that, I also think it will be very helpful even if you are already well on the Real Food journey, because everyone still has friends or loved ones who still aren’t “there yet”, and we wish we knew how to best teach them about Real Foods.  This class can help you with that, too.

Not yet!

While I’d love to get this class out to you now, I want you to know that most important to me first is making sure I’m offering you good value and content.  Hopefully it won’t be too much longer ‘til I can launch.  (This is hardly a big deal in the scheme of life, but if you could shoot up a few prayers for me, I’d appreciate it.  It’s not easy pulling any of this off, along with all the everyday blogging and being a Mom, too.  But I know it will help so many of you!)

Real Food Ingredient GuideDo you want to be the first to know when the class will launch?

Go to this sign up post to learn more about the newsletter, or just go to the end of this post to sign up and for a chance to win a Real Food Ingredient Guide.  You’ll then be on my “first to know” list!

I want it to be fun!

I promise to grab your attention and use different ways to teach you, just as you told me you wanted in the online survey I took recently.  I’m also shooting for that fine line between offering professional, quality content, yet keeping it real and fun and trying not be too anal about how my house looks, the kitchen remodel we need, how quiet the kids are, or how perfect my delivery is.  I want to help you understand that eating better and feeding your family healthier meals isn’t about being perfect, Lord knows I’m a good one to demonstrate that!

I also plan to let you hear from others besides just me, because we all know that there’s a lot I don’t know!  We’ll even take a few “field trips” to visit some experts.

Basically my goal will be to provide solid, easy to understand information in a way that will hold your attention and help all of you who are in the beginning stages of your Real Food journey (or to help you if you know someone else who is at that stage).  We’ll go week by week and get you through the basics (and beyond) in manageable chunks, so as not to overwhelm you!

Here’s the Sneak Peek, but keep in mind that the below descriptions are in their super-condensed form – I had to be careful not to give away all the surprises I have planned.  :)

FREE Intro Class:

When you sign up for the Real Food Online Rookie Class, you’ll get access to the FREE intro class which will include…

  • A little more about me (I always like to know more about the person who is teaching me something, maybe because I’m nosy…?), including a short video with a look around my kitchen and our home.  (I also like to see the surroundings when someone is talking to me via video.  I’m very visual and wonder dumb things like, “What’s over to the right of where she’s standing…?”)
  • An explanation of what the whole class will be be based on:  Anne Sergeant’s simple philosophy of good nutrition.  “A healthy diet is like a three-legged stool:  Getting the bad stuff out; getting the good stuff in; and properly preparing your foods for nutrient density.”
  • More basics including “How do you know who to believe when it comes to health & nutrition?”, “WHY should we eat Real Food?”, “What is the 80/20 plan and how can it help us to relax a little about food?”

Here is a little about what I’ll cover in the classes:

  • Getting the bad stuff out : I’ll take you to the store and show you how to read labels, avoid the junk, and find better options.  I can’t wait to show you all the stuff I used to buy regularly.  I may even reveal areas where I still have a ways to go…
  • Get the good stuff in – I’ll show you how simple it can be to make super nourishing, REAL FOOD recipes that are packed with nutrients.  (Including a demonstration of how I make my homemade soaked bread recipe.) I’ll show you how I get the fermented cod liver oil down and if I can clear it with Kent I may even give you a peek at how well two of our kids take it for us, too.
  • Lots of mealtime help! We’ll go through each meal (and snacks!) to talk about tips, ideas, recipes, ways to avoid fast food, etc.  I’ll share what I know and I hope you’ll share your ideas with us in the forum that I’ll be setting up.
  • Farm visits! I can’t wait to take you to meet my farm friends so you can see where we get our life-giving farm-fresh foods.  QUESTION for you:  I’ll be interviewing the farmers where we get our milk, our meat and our produce.  Is there anything you’d like me to ask them?!
  • Natural lifestyle issues: Here we’ll cover all that other stuff that you may wonder about that has nothing to do with food.  Usually when someone is thinking more about better nutrition, environmental toxins become a concern as well.
  • Real Food tips for saving money will also be discussed.

A possible bonus class if there’s enough interest:

If enough of you tell me you’d be interested in this, I’ll offer a bonus class (or a separate class) to talk about overcoming infertility, the optimal pregnancy diet, vaccine issues, breastfeeding, feeding solids, co-sleeping, etc.

Let me know your thoughts on that!

dining out

Today for Real Food Wednesday I’m answering another Random Reader Question about eating out at restaurants when trying to follow a more nutritious, traditional diet.  I’ll share my own thoughts, but we’ll have more fun if you all jump into the comments with your opinions on this topic, too!

From Leslie:  “OK Kelly, here are my questions…  We get invited to go out to dinner often.  How can we continue to eat the traditional way and still go out?  Are there “good” restaurants?  Are there things we should avoid on the menus?  Should I just pack raw milk and butter in my bag?  Thanks.”

The “80/20 Rule”

As much as I keep hoping that someday it will be more like 90/10, we mostly go by the 80/20 rule around here.  The 80% is most of the time when we’re at home, although we’re not always good here; and the 20% is usually whenever we go to restaurants or friends’ and family’s homes to eat, but sometimes there are good choices to be found when out visiting, too.

When visiting friends and family

What’s nice is that over the years, more and more of my friends and family have gotten on board with eating more traditional, nutritious foods, so it’s gotten easier when we go to certain places.  For those that aren’t on board, there are usually some good options available, and if the not-so-good options look good to me or the kids, I count it as part of that 20% and try to chill out.  (It’s not always easy for me!  Have you read the post about how to handle it when visiting those who don’t eat like you do?  Or this one for when you get home:  Counteracting the effects of junk food.)

When eating out

Many restaurants are starting to offer more quality food – here’s a post with a list of good restaurants that might be near where you live, and be sure to comment there if you know of more!  Sadly, it’s usually only the higher end restaurants that serve quality food, but there are some faster-food places on this list, too.

We don’t eat out often, but when we do, I avoid fried food like the plague because the unhealthy vegetable oils that most restaurants use make me sick, literally.  If I give in to what might look good to me, I pay for it.  If the kids are with us, I always order them something to replace the poison sticks…I mean French fries, that usually come with their dinner.  And I always ask for real butter if I’m eating the bread.

We don’t eat fast food these days, except for an occasional pizza ordered in (still not great though), or Subway, and we only eat certain things there.  (I check the online menus to see which breads have no trans fat or high fructose corn syrup, and we always ask for the shredded cheddar cheese, never the American slices of fake cheese.)

Bottom line:

We try not to get too wigged out about the occasional meal out.  While avoiding the really bad stuff and compromising on the not-so-bad stuff now and then, hopefully we are staying pretty close to our 80/20 percentages.  :)

Wish Your Kids Would Stop Complaining? Getting Your Kids to Eat Healthy Foods (Random Reader Question)

March 11, 2009

Martha asks:
I was wondering how old your kids were when you started to change the way you cooked/ate, and how they felt about the change? Some changes have been easy for us, but others leave my oldest one or two complaining.

My response:
Our oldest is 16 and when we started eating healthier meals 5 years [...]

I’m really not a food snob!

May 6, 2008

I AM NOT!
I know you may find it difficult to believe, but I’m really not a food snob! When I’m eating at a restaurant, at someone else’s house, or eating something made by someone else, I really don’t think all that much about what’s in it. Partly because what I don’t know can’t bother me, [...]
