Good morning readers! I spent the weekend up North at my Aunt and Uncle's with my Mom and sisters for a girl weekend. We had a great time, but get this. I was picking up pictures at Walgreens, so my Aunt asked me to pick up her cholesterol medication for her.
Here's your question of the week: Was I or was I not able to keep my mouth shut?
Of course not! Not that it made a difference, but at least I tried. Who can blame her? Let's see, listen to her niece who writes a little blog, or listen to her doctor with years of medical schooling and an established practice? So I told her what I always say, “Don't believe me, do some research and see how safe or necessary cholesterol meds really are.” I wouldn't actually want anyone to do something as drastic as go off medications prescribed by their doctor just because of something I say anyway, because there's too much I don't know, but I do wish they would at least read up on it. I'm pretty sure my Mom and sisters are on cholesterol meds, too, though, so I was the weirdo as usual! Oh well, it doesn't bother me because I'm also the only one not on any medications or dealing with health issues. Not yet anyway, I guess you never know. (Scroll down toward the bottom of this healthy fats post for some good info to get you started if you want to do some reading on the cholesterol issue.)
On to this week's links!
- What the?! Did you see this article by Chris Kresser? The Nitrate and Nitrite Myth: Another Reason not to Fear Bacon. I actually haven't given this much thought in recent years anyway I guess, but only because I'd been buying our pork and lunch meats from our farmer – so I know it's raised and fed naturally. Read the article and let me know what you think.
- This article will give you a good kick in the pants reminder to know where your meat comes from: Cash-strapped Farmers Feed Candy to Cows. As if feeding cows corn isn't bad enough? And it's no wonder we have an obesity crisis in our country – what they eat, we then eat! There's more here on making good meat choices. Only readers in parts of Michigan will see a link here for safe, healthy meat.
- Are you still unsure about Proposal 37? This Man Is Lying To About Your Food. “Does it matter that the “No on Prop 37″ ads are primarily funded by pesticide companies, the very same companies that told us DDT and Agent Orange were safe?”
- One more good one from Kristen: Objections to Proposal 37? Read This. “As the election day draws nearer in California, giant agribusiness companies like Monsanto and Dow and Con Agra are spending $1 MILLION per day in advertising to campaign against Prop 37.“
- A reader, Sarah, is wondering if any of you have had experience in using Threelac for Candida? Please let us know if you know anything, thank you for your help!
- I've been meaning to tell you that I finished the final book in the Jewel Trilogy by Hallee Bridgeman: Topaz Heat (Volume 3). I read each of them in one day because once you pick them up, there's nooooo putting them down, they're that good. (Thanks Hallee and get writing, we want more!)
- Local readers, we need you!!! Our local WAPF chapter is looking for a person willing to do a fermented food demonstration at a health food store to represent us AND we're looking for someone who might want to moderate a forum for local Weston A. Pricers. Anyone interested?? If so, email me: [email protected]. Thanks!
- Did you see this well-researched post from Jill last week where she outlined the many reasons they do not get the flu shot and why her husband is being forced to wear a mask at work now? It's a follow up to the post from a while back where Becky shared the letter she wrote to the hospital where she worked: Healthcare Workers: How to Refuse Mandatory Vaccines and Not Get Fired.
- Wait until you see this short video that I believe is a horror film for Real Foodies. How could anyone not think this is positively frightening?! It features the white house pastry chef: Scientists outline new cuisine developments.

Horror film is right! This is certainly “Frankenfood”! Yuck!

I’m SO happy you enjoyed the trilogy! I am writing my next book right now — and I revealed to my Facebook readers that when this one is finished (within the next week or so) I am going to begin writing the Jewel Trilogy 1.5 — a novella about Tony and Robin’s wedding! My 15-year-old, Kaylee, asked me to write the wedding and as soon as I started thinking about it, I couldn’t stop.
Thank you for mentioning it, my friend. You rock.

Hallee, I have two words to respond to your comment:
WOO-HOOOOOOOOOO! 🙂

Those smug jerks! Eggs are from the middle ages and the First Family is out-dated in their desire for ‘happy’ food. Like we, who prefer real food, are just a bunch of antiquated hippies.

I know! And did you see that puff of blue smoke coming out from his mouth?? That is SO scary that he ingested that stuff…

So glad everyone is getting to read the article about the crazy White House chef. That freaked me out a bit when I read it this summer. Pretty soon they’ll just prescribe you a pill instead of food. As for the bacon….. we have raised and slaughtered on pig so far with many more in the works so I dont worry too much long term about this however in the meantime our local farmer that we buy pastured 100% grassfed beef from also sells heritage pork. well they have nitrates in the bacon. the bacon is gorgeous huge slabs of humanely raised pork. we were buying applegate bacon for 5.99 1/2 lb. well after the farmer told us the nitrate from the saliva thing we tried it out and well my little light bulb blew up. My two little ones glow whenever poison is near. so back to applegate we go. I have to believe that nitrate from celery is better for you than a processed chemical. thats what these people are constantly missing. like would you prefer beef from a cow or from a test tube?
KitchenKop says
Thanks again for sharing that article with me last summer, Leah!
So your kids reacted to your local farmer’s bacon but not the Applegate bacon? Or am I misunderstanding?
But yes, I agree, just common sense says that natural nitrates must be better.

Leah,
I read the article but don’t understand what you mean about the light bulb or little ones glowing. Am I being too literal? 🙂
Speaking of Applegate: Does anyone know for sure if they use meat glue or not?
Thanks.

Since I am out here on the east coast and all hunkered down for the hurricane, I am keeping my eye on various news stories related to this. Kelly, you might even feel the effects in your general area as the storm is expected to cause huge waves on Lake Michigan.
I am not near the shore so big waves are not a worry for me.
KitchenKop says
Wow, that’s interesting. We’re about 40 minutes from the Big Lake, but I’ll be watching that out of curiosity.
Stay safe Soli!

Horror film is right! Yikes! Since when did our bodies suddenly get re-designed to digest and assimilate these chemical compounds? Just like with aspartame, we can fool our taste buds, but not our bodies. I can see an even greater increase in obesity, malnutrition, cancers, mood disorders, digestive disorders, auto-immune diseases, and more in the future is this really is the future of “food”. Yowza. Food was never meant to be rocket science!
