I need your help! Since my recent post on making homemade soaked tortillas and the other post about all the fast food dinners that I can make with them, many of you have convinced me in the comments that I need a tortilla maker because it makes the whole process MUCH simpler. I have no idea of brands or features I should look for, though, so please share your suggestions in the comments!
You guys are going to think I’m all fickle because I’ve changed my mind so drastically about this, BUT guess what? I love Zumba now and wish I could take it more than once a week! Yes, I hated it at first, I felt all uncoordinated and didn’t know any songs. I still don’t know all the songs and feel awkward MOST of the time, but somehow I’ve grown to love it! (And almost everyone else looks awkward too so nobody cares.) It really grows on you and I’m glad I didn’t quit. So if you try it and hate it at first, don’t give up!
Thank you to Jane from the Feingold Association for sending me a link to this Washington Post article: The rainbow of food dyes in our grocery aisles has a dark side. “Artificial dyes aren’t just making your Yoplait Light Red Raspberry yogurt blush and your Kraft Macaroni and Cheese glow in the dark. They are causing behavioral problems and disrupting children’s attention, according to a growing number of scientific studies.”
In case you missed the post last week on low-carb diets and kidney stones, you’ll have to check out the comments there, they got pretty juicy.
Did you see this beautiful post Ann Marie did with a comparison of a conventional dairy and a raw milk dairy? (Complete with plenty of pictures of course!)
I’ll see you here later this week for Real Food Wednesday! (Did you know that participating is a great way to get more traffic to your blog?)

Hey Kelly-Did you know that there is a Zumba game for the Wii? I actually just got it, and it is so much fun! I have never actually been to a class so I can’t compare, but the classes I looked into were $10 per class, so the price of the game seems well worth it. And I get to do it in my living room which means noone else can see how uncoordinated I really am (and I’m pretty sure I will get a much better workout once I can actually do the moves!) hehe
.
I may have to ask for that for Mother’s Day because I know she doesn’t have classes during the summer because the gym gets SO hot. Thanks for the idea!!!
Woot Zumba!
Is your body now starting to get the moves? That’s the best part. The last few months I’ve *finally* been really getting and hitting moves when I belly dance and my teacher has said as much. Which means she now makes me work harder and pushes more.
SOME of them I’ve gotten down, but others I just don’t know if I ever will since I don’t seem to have the jiggle in my wiggle that others do, LOL!!!
Given how long it’s taken my body to get the hang of some moves in belly dance, all I can say is stick with it. One day it’s just going to *work* and you’ll squeal with delight when it does.
The husband just told me that Sicilianos is expanding to include bread making stuff! I saw on FaceBook yesterday that they were making tortillas with fresh-milled flour. I haven’t checked them out yet but they might be able to suggest a tortilla press.
Ooooh, I love that place! (That’s where I get my supplies for making Kefir Soda, too…beer bottles, caps, etc.)
BTW, I loved your Bistro review Wendy, I’m linking to it this week. Thanks for going!
Kel
Kelly,
I love my Villaware Grand Wrap Tortilla Press.
I’d be interested in what others have to say.
Thanks Adrienne, first I want to see what brand everyone recommends.
Oops, meant to put that under your ebay comment…
I’m so glad you stuck with Zumba! I started going in January, only once per week, and I loved it from the start– of course, I’m all left feet, but just turn on Latin music and I’m happy!
I looked into buying the Villaware GrandWrap Tortilla/Flatbread maker, but the problem seems to be that every brand or electric press that is suggested to me, you can no longer buy !!!
I have a slightly used one for sale if you are interested. I was planning to list on Ebay but haven’t done it yet.
I’m watching the replies as well Kelly as I think a tortilla press would be a good investment. We don’t eat much bread but use tortillas probably 3x a week. Hoping you get some good response
I have had two electric tortilla presses in the past. They both failed–the hinge part of the press broke both times. If I was going to do it again, I would get just the manual press — a tortilla press that only presses but does not cook the tortillas. Press the tortillas and have ready a hot cast iron tortilla pan that you can then bake the freshly pressed tortillas on. It’s not that tedious and seems to work just fine.
Oh, I just bought one from a local mexican shop. It looks like this one: http://www.amazon.com/Imusa-Victoria-Tortilla-Press-2-Inch/dp/B00164VNYQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1301324738&sr=8-1-spell even though it’s not that brand. The store had 3 different brands but they said they were basically all the same, so I bought the cheapest one
It makes me happy and making tortillas so much easier!
That Cheeseslave post was an earth-shaker! Everywhere I shared it, a great conversation ensued. And when I met Mark McAfee at the farmer’s market yesterday, we were both excited about how it’s resonating with so many people. (I posted about meeting him in today’s blog!)
Maggie, I know! I suggested yesterday that Ann Marie ask Mark to jump in and reply to Amanda’s blasts one by one. I’m sure he’s done so for years and is probably tired of it, but since the post is becoming so widely read, I think he might want to jump in again. I’d love to be in on a *friendly* discussion between them so I can hear his side to each of her remarks. (There’s always another side!)
It’s my understanding that the tortilla doesn’t actually touch the press anyway, in most cases. Most people seem to tell me that you have to use wax or parchment paper between the press and the bread .. .OR some sort of heavy plastic (like a zip bag).
Is that everyone else’s experience ?
Did you ever get a tortilla press? If so, what do you think of it?
Yes, I should probably share this in Monday’s post, too, in case others are wondering…
I got a $10 job at the Mexican market and it’s a pain. I think that it’s probably meant to be used for corn tortillas instead of flour because it only flattens a little and then I still have to roll it out to get them thin enough, unfortunately!
