As you know, I’m nothing if not passionate about getting the TRUTH out about saturated fats. Thank you to Jeanmarie who sent me a link to an older post I’d missed from Jimmy Moore’s Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb blog where this issue is covered very well. (I actually did an interview with Jimmy recently for his podcast! It will air next month.)
Normally I don’t write a whole post around one link, but this one is an important exception.
If you’ve struggled with your weight for years and years, read this post and watch the video he links to. See if you don’t find the answers you’re looking for:

Thank you for sharing this! Had this been common knowledge and acceptable 20-30 years ago, my life would have taken a much different path; as it is, I am morbidly obese and low fat dieted most of my life with lots of exercising (which shot my knees). I loved the video. I have always respected Dr. Weil and am so glad to see him agree with Gary Taubes. I admit, I couldn’t get through the book but I know I agree with it. I cannot tolerate carbs well (I am self proclaimed “gluten-intolerant”). The doctor can’t confirm what I suspect but I feel like I cannot tolerate flours and sugars. Last night after months of avoiding refined carbs, flours, ect… I had a piece of cake and overnight, I gained 5lbs (overnight), I was so bloated I could barely buckle my seatbelt and I feel terrible. I was in the bathroom most of the evening, blech. It’s going to take me a few days or even weeks to get back to normal.
I have spent my whole life overweight, as a child being humiliated and shamed by my mother for being fat while being fed a white flour diet loaded with sugar. We had a terrible diet growing up, no protein, never any milk or vegetables. I was doomed. My brother was the same way. Mom literally starved herself on 800 calories a day to maintain her weight. I’d rather eat butter, meat and cheese, thank you!
The other day I found my 5yo daughter and her friend eating sugar out of the bag with a spoon. I told her that I would rather her eat a block of butter than eat sugar. Her friend looked at me with buggy eyes but it’s true! Fat doesn’t make you fat.
April, you and I could be sisters! It’s been so hard for me to shift gears from FAT IS BAD to GOOD FATS ARE GOOD. I read Taubes’ book and it convinced me of the science, but the proof is really in my own body and how I feel every day. Sometimes I want to hire a skywriter or buy Super Bowl ad time!
I am unable to watch the video. It says the server isn’t responding. I usually don’t have trouble, so wondering if anyone else is having difficulty bringing up the video and post. I have been struggling with my weight since I was 44 and became menopausal. We completely have switched to the traditional diet for 1 year now, my husband lost 30 lbs. and I haven’t gained, but haven’t lost either. But I feel the best I have since menopause though.
Well anyway, hoping to figure this out since I’m interested in what is said.
Thank you
I’m having trouble getting the website pulled up too
I am interested also, but it says “the link is broken”. I tried to google it, but am not able to find it that way either. I am trying to lose weight and would love to read and listen to this. Thank You.

KK: A little unrelated to today’s post but this popped up today, and I thought it would be of some interest to you. It’s about fish oil. You are one of my “experts,” as is the WAPF
and I take the brand you and they recommend. But this is an important reminder to be careful about which brands we choose.

Kelly, thanks for posting this. BTW, I went to Gary Taubes’ website recently, Innovative Metabolic Solutions (http://www.myimsonline.com/), and later someone from the site called me about some classes they’re offering, and, to make a long story short, I learned that Gary is working on a shorter, consumer-friendly version of the book, tentatively to be called “What Makes Us Fat.” Not sure whether it’s out this year or next, but it will probably be 200 pages or less, according to what I was told, and that was based on an early draft (which I obviously haven’t seen). So, for those of us finding it difficult to get all the way through Good Calories, Bad Calories, there is hope down the road!
Thanks for the link. A friend gave me Sally Fallon’s “Nourishing Traditions” cookbook a few years ago and it has helped me tremendously! I grew up on skim milk, margarine, artificial sweetener, and lots of other bad foods. I was a skinny kid, but once I hit 17, I struggled. I was VERY active, I ran track in high school and college. There were times I worked out so hard I passed out, and yet, I stayed 10 – 20 pounds overweight, all while sticking to a low fat/ high carb diet. What’s amazing is that at 36 years old, while 3 months pregnant with my 5th child, I still weigh less and wear a smaller size than I did when I was in my early 20’s. I also haven’t ran or worked out hard for the past 8 years, just walking and chasing little ones. I haven’t been feeding my family well due to horrid morning sickness for the past two months, but am starting to recover and hope to get back to better cooking again. I’m so glad I found your blog…it gives me the boost I need to stay motivated!
Eating whole foods with lots of fat, I lost all of the baby weight from two pregnancies plus 30 lbs. I weigh the least I ever have as an adult. The weight just FALLS off. (I’m in my mid-20s.) And yet my dad (60 and struggled with his weight his whole life, vegetarian for awhile, lots of low-fat, processed food) says, “Are you sure bacon grease is good for you?” LOL.
April, your story breaks my heart, yet how neat that you are making changes now, eating real food, and changing your story from here on!
Katie, that story is scary! I added that link to my CLO site so people can see another reason why they shouldn’t buy plain “fish oil” from the store. Thanks for sharing it.
Erin, I remember well that morning sickness period – it’s all about survival and survival only!
Jeanmarie, thanks for sharing that great scoop!
(How’s the new job going?!)
Those of you who had trouble with the link – was it with the link in MY post – the one going to Jimmy’s site? Or the one in Jimmy’s site going to the video? I just checked both and they worked for me. Let me know and I can look into it more. Sorry guys.
Kel
Can’t wait to hear your podcast, Kelly! I like Peggy’s idea of hiring a skywriter to get this info out there. Anyone got some extra cash for a superbowl ad?
Melissa & Peggy, a Superbowl ad is a great idea. How many million would we need to raise?!! We could do it! (Not)
