  • Do you have any super easy recipes that you’d be willing to share with us?  Now that the school year has begun again, we can all use more “fast food” meals that don’t include a drive-thru window.  What are your favorite meals that are: 1.  fast, 2. loved by all in your family, and 3.  nutrient dense? Please email them to me, preferably with a picture of yourself that I could use in the post and a picture of the recipe if possible!   (Not asking much am I?)  OH, and if you have a blog, be sure to also give me your link to share.  (And then be patient as it may take me a while to get all of them posted.)  Here’s my current list for you to look over: Our version of fast-food.
  • IMG_3704 Have you ever eaten fried eggplant?  You may be surprised at how tasty this recipe is!
  • Thanks to Bob for sending this motivating article about nutritious school lunches.  I’m excited to tell you that a group of parents in our school district are gearing up to hopefully make some changes in our lunch program.  Thankfully another Mom is ready to lead this effort, and I’ve been helping her by organizing our email list.  If you haven’t received an email from me about this and have kids in the Rockford, MI school district, let me know if you are interested in being involved or just keeping informed!
  • Another one from Bob (thanks Bob!):  Big Food vs. Big Insurance.  As much as Obama’s health care plan scares me, this article by Michael Pollan shows one good that could come of it.
  • What’s the deal with soy?  First it’s “good”, now it’s “bad”, read Jenny’s post about soy.
  • As I write this on Saturday, I’m with my Mom who is in the hospital with another UTI and a painful kidney stone – I’d love to know if anyone has suggestions for how to prevent these beyond the typical, “drink more fluids” advice.  A little Googling had me ready to go get her some apple cider vinegar, but she’s so nauseous from the pain, she can’t even think about that yet.  Please shoot up a prayer for her.  (Thank you.)
  • Sorry about Real Food Wednesday last week.  Ann Marie had a few technical nightmares she was dealing with, as you probably noticed if you visited the Real Food Media site recently.  This week I’ll be hosting and hope to see you here with all your great Real Food tips!

Check out http://www.earthclinic.com They have great anecdotal evidence for some kidney stone home remedies!

Kelly, I am so sorry your mom is dealing with this. My fil had trouble with kidney stones for years (27 since I’ve been in the family) until 2 years ago. A couple of years ago he was told by an alternative dr. to drink juiced lemons (rind and all), about 1/3 cup 2-3 times a day till the pain subsided. He hasn’t had a stone since starting this, and has even found that if he drinks a bit now and then, he doesn’t even get to the point of feeling one coming. I juice them and my mil freezes them in ice cube trays and every week or so he thaws one out and downs it as prevention. I can’t even tell you what a big deal this has been for him. He travels a lot and we used to really be concerned that he’d get somewhere and start one and not even be able to get to a hospital by himself. Now he drinks it a day or two before he leaves as precaution. It is a pretty big deal in our family after seeing him suffer for so many years. You may want to check and see what kind of stones she has and do some googling to see if this kind of protocol would help. Blessings!

YAY! Mom just passed the stone and is going home!

NancyO,
What do you mean “rind and all”? I’m definitely going to tell Mom about this – she loves lemon, so this is something she might actually do. How do we know which kind of stone she has and which one would respond well to this lemon drink?
I also read that apple cider vinegar (maybe with a little honey) is good for this (there’s not much that stuff doesn’t help!), but Mom would be more likely to drink the lemon.
Thank you!!
Kelly

I’m so glad she passed it! It’s amazing that something so small could be compared to child-birth in it’s pain, but if you’ve even seen anyone try to pass one of these, you know it feels huge!

Our (natural minded) dr. said to put the whole lemon in the juicer, rind and all, so I am thinking there must be some constituents in the rind that are helpful, and not just the juice alone….as in using a reamer (citrus juicer) to just get the juice and tossing the rinds. When I do this the rind is pulverized and comes out in the basket, but there may be some good stuff that is juiced out. Does that make sense?

As far as what kind of stones…I am not speaking with any expertise here. I read something recently (sorry I don’t remember where) that talked about there being different kinds of kidney stones. You might google and see what you come up with. I sure don’t see that lemons would hurt anything though. An yes, I think ACV is a cure all that we should tap into…I buy it by the gallon, but don’t always know all it can do. So far, I just use it in dressings, etc. How about an ACV post? (hint, hint!) It may do the same thing as lemons, but if you love lemons it would help to have the flavor in your court. My fil drinks it straight and says it is the easiest thing he’s ever done that’s shown the biggest pay off. Hope this helps your mom, too.

I had a kidney stone once (and that was ENOUGH for me!). I was going to a naturalpath (sp?) doctor at the time. He told me to stay home, get someone to help me, and then get a six-pack of Classic coke, and asparagus. I needed to drink as much classic coke as I possibly could and then when I couldn’t drink anymore, follow it with asparagus that had been cooked and pureed. (I used canned). He told me I would pass the kidney stone in a few hours at the most. I did what he said, got diarrhea and passed the kidney stone. :) When I asked why it worked, he said Classic coke is basically “medicine” (and should never be drunk except medicinally), and asked me if I had ever placed a nail in a glass of Classic coke. Well, I had never done that, but I’m now a firm believer in drinking classic coke to dissolve a kidney stone…it beat going to the hospital and/or having surgery to remove it. And it worked in a matter of an hour or two. The asparagus drink is just a “chaser” so to speak, to make your tummy settle down! Anyway, I know it sounds weird, and it is, but it worked! I’ve never had another kidney stone either. But saying all this, the lemon drink would probably work on the same principle…lots of acid in those lemons! The best preventative I think is drinking lots of water each day! I enjoy your blog, btw………….sorry this is so long!

I do not have any advice on kidney stones but cranberry supplements helped my kids a lot when they got UTIs. We were able to not go down the antibiotic route and the infection passed within one day. My youngest did not pee for 24hrs it was so painful. After that 24hrs the pain subsided quite a bit.

Sorry, I don’t have much advice here but I am currently trying to take care of a UTI by drinking cranberry juice, parsley tea (google it and you’ll get quite a bit of information on it), and lemon water. It seems to be working. My MIL said that she dissolved her kidney stones by drinking lemon water too. Hope this helps!

Great ideas to try, everyone, thank you! I’m so glad she passed that one, but know there will be more and I asked her to read all these comments when she’s settled back home and has a minute. She can’t do the coke one for sure, though, because she’s diabetic, and I’d rather she try the lemon first and not risk all that nasty high fructose corn syrup in her body anyway! :)

Kelly, I’ve heard that a magnesium deficiency can cause the build up of calcium that makes a kidney stone. It’s worth looking into.
