  • Did anyone do something especially fun over the 4th? (Tell us in the comments!)  We had our annual trip to Lake Michigan with our neighbors, Joe & Meg.  Meg’s parents are so neat – every year they skedaddle so Meg & Mary and their families can have friends up to the cottage for a few days:  US!  Woohoo, how blessed are we?!  The picture above is from a few years ago.  Yep, I took it…you don’t believe me do you?  It’s only because you can’t get a bad shot there.  OK, onto some chatting about our favorite topic:  food!
  • Remember not long ago I was asking if any of you read a couple books about sneaking veggies into our kids’ foods?  Well today my latest Wise Traditions journal came in the mail and guess what was in there?   A thumbs down book review of Jessica Seinfeld’s book, “Deceptively Delicious:  Simple Secrets to Get Your Kids Eating Good Food”: I was not surprised to find that she uses low fat dairy products, tofu, cold cereal, and lean meats.  I was more alarmed to find that she wants us to bake with canola oil, vegetable oil, nonstick cooking spray and “trans-fat-free” tub margarine spread…and this is a cookbook of recipes for our children!” However, the reviewer did say this, “If you are someone like me, who follows recipes very loosely, this is a serviceable cookbook.”
  • coffee-thumb The next book review, another thumbs down, also caught my eye…  Years ago, before I discovered Nourishing Traditions, my fascination with nutrition was just gearing up, and I read, Fertility, Cycles & Nutrition 4th Edition.”  Sally Fallon, the book reviewer, had this to say:  “Cold breakfast cereals, microwaved food, pasta, vegetarian diets, lots of goitrogenic raw vegetables and millet, canola oil and yeasted whole wheat bread with added gluten are all fine with Shannon, while she offers nary a mention of the nutrient-dense foods so vital for good health – raw milk, organ meats, grass-fed animal products, cod liver oil, nourishing broths, lacto-fermented foods and properly prepared whole grains.  Instead she recommends a ton of supplements.”  I do want to clarify, however, that while the nutrition info in this book may not be the best, I would still suggest you get a copy if you’re curious about your cycle and how different factors can affect it.  I still refer to mine now and then just for that reason.
  • I found this at the Moms for Safe Food blog last week in the Real Food Wednesday blog carnival links: Weed Killer Kills Human Cells.  If you weren’t already concerned about chemicals on our food, hopefully this will make you think. Also, don’t forget Real Food Wednesday this week, hosted here at the Kitchen Kop blog!  :)

Okay, that was funny . . . But seriously, Taco Bell is my oldest son’s favorite fast food. I know he and his friends go weekly. And I have to admit when I was pregnant with my middle child I craved it. I could barely keep anything down the first 5 months of my pregnancies, but with each child I craved and could keep down a different fast food . . . Ugh!!

Wow, what can the world be thinking when people can get that excited about eating their own garbage. I guess I was naive enough to think that by going green they meant natural, from nature, not nothing from it. How can the FDA allow them to sell that and call it food? We have been eating less fast food but sadly haven’t given it up totally, this really makes you think long and hard before you drive in again.

On a side note, does anyone know if you can freeze raw milk? Have you done it? I found a farm but it is quite a drive so I’d like to freeze it if I won’t kill too much of the good stuff. And how does it thaw? Does the taste or texture change? Thanks.

Lilia, most of that video was a joke, just making sure you knew that! :) Yes, you can freeze raw milk – Ann Marie (Cheeseslave) does it all the time.

i agree completely with the review of Deceptively Delicious. I appreciate that the author suggests using organic food but then she is on this major anti-fat rampage it seems. the general idea of using pureed veggies is cool, and probabaly healthy, especially for kids who refuse vegetables in their normal form, but #1 it is just so much extra work, and #2 the recipes, as the journal you referenced points out, are very low in nutrient dense foods for the most part and call for many food products, not real food.

I have to admit, that video had me going for a few seconds! It’s a great representation of how some people just don’t get the big picture of “green.”. It’s almost like Monsanto claiming to promote sustainability.

Ok, I got fooled up until the last minute of the video. Have you ever read the ingredients list of the taco bell sauce? The list is so big and filled with non pronounceable ingredients that it could confirm this video!
