I know all you real foodies out there are concerned about more than just real food. Besides being careful about what’s going into you’re body, you’re also concerned about what is going on your body, and on your kids’ bodies, too. I’ve often heard that you shouldn’t put anything on your skin that you couldn’t put in your mouth. I’m not great about following that advice, though, which is why this topic is a good one for me – I need more ideas for quality natural care body products that are also affordable. Every time I go to buy more shampoo or conditioner, for example, I’m still so tempted to grab that $1 bottle of Suave! Although lately I’ve resisted and bought the $7 (gasp!) bottle of organic coconut shampoo and conditioner. (Personally, I’d especially love to hear from those of you that have found less expensive natural options for those.)

I love using real food products on my body. I figure since my skin is my largest organ, why would I put something ON it that I wouldn’t put IN it? Anyway, here’s my real food lip balm. Make it even less expensive with recycled lip balm tubes (just ask your friends!)http://localnourishment.wordpress.com/2009/03/17/real-food-lip-balm/

I get to be the first one in Mr. Linky!! My post is about coconut oil deodorant. It’s amazing! Read the blog, make some deodorant! Maybe tomorrow I’ll write a comment about my no-poo routine, or maybe I’ll just blog about it in the future. I love that too!!

This is a great topic. I can’t wait to read everyone’s tips.
I wrote about how I failed miserably at No Poo. (Think Seinfeld’s Low Flow Showerhead episode.)
And I shared a bunch of natural and organic products I love.

I make a lot of my skin care products with no artificial chemicals or preservatives. Real Food for the skin! And it is true, the skin is not a barrier, things that go on it do enter the bloodstream! Old timers used to put kerosene on their scalp to get rid of their lice, YIKES!

I added a link to my post about what I use for facial cleanser, moisturizer, eye-makeup remover and lip balm. There are also links to what I use for deodorant, soap, and toothpaste. Soon I will be posting about my no poo results.

I use Mychelle cleansers some of the time, but they get pricey so I found this recipe for a facial cleanser and it works great. My skin feels so smooth! I mix all the ingredients and shake them together in a leftover kid’s cup from a restaurant. Usually I just make a 1/2 batch, and one ounce is equivalent to 2 T. I follow up with apricot kernel oil. I love that good quality skin care doesn’t have to be expensive! I also use tea tree oil for the rare blemish and lavender oil for insect bites.
3 oz honey
4 oz finely ground almonds
2 oz apple cider vinegar
2oz water
6 drops lavender essential oil

Im fairly simple in my natural bath and body products:
for soap, i LOVE to buy from this place: http://www.chagrinvalleysoapandcraft.com
I LOVE her soaps and her customer service is LOVELY (she’s a lovely woman)
I also buy my shampoo bars from her
I also love using pure African black soap from http://www.agbangakarite.com (i usually buy it in bulk, 12 bars for about $45, last me up to 6 months) because its great for conditioning the skin and washing my hair.
For body moisturizing, i either use Chagrin Valley’s whipped cocoa butter (SO decadent!) or pure coconut oil or agbanga karite’s pure shea butter.
For body exfoliating, i use put a cup of brown sugar in a jar with about half a cup (maybe?) of olive oil (or coconut oil would work too) and then maybe fragrance it with some essential oil. But there are many sites with body scrub recipes, just put “body scrub recipes” into google and then jump down the rabbit hole lol.
For lip moisture, i just put a small dab of pure shea butter on my lips
For fragrances (which i use VERY rarely and sparingly), i just buy frangrance oils from my local street or ethnic corner shop vendors.
I also like to make my own face mask by mashing together one small banana, a few drops of lemon juice and/or a few drops of orange juice (you can add a tbsp of baking soda for exfoliating). My skins BEAMS after that mask lol.
If i just want to exfoliate, i just put a palmful of baking soda in my hand and then wash my face as usual or lately ive loved using this crushed walnut facial scrub (sounds abrasive but its not because the walnut is ground VERY finely) from http://www.productsoftheearth.com The scrub is like $17 but it comes in this sizable jar and a little goes a LONG way so i dont forsee needing to buy it again for at least a year (and thas with exfoliating once or twice every 7 to 10 days) and thas MORE than getting your money’s worth in my opinion and my just SINGS afterwards, lol.
HTH!

OMG Kelly it’s bad enough when you have all those ads for wrinkles and fat stomachs — now you have an ad for BACK ACNE! LOL!

Oops, forgot to add what i use for deoderant….i just buy it from hear http://www.productsoftheearth.com
BUT, if i dont apply some coconut oil to my underarms first, the deoderant doesnt last as long as I want it to. So, im about to visit http://realfoodmyway.blogspot.com/2009/03/coconut-oil-killed-my-stink.html to see if this works a little better!

Great scoop girls!!!
Ann Marie, I know, it’s like Google knows me or something, with all the wrinkles and fat stomach ads. However, I don’t have acne on my back! (Yet…?) I haven’t had the joy of seeing that particular ad quite yet, gee I can’t wait. How nice when ALL our ads are the RFM ones!
Diana 03.18.09 at 4:12 pm
I’ve been using almond oil for eye makeup remover – works great and moisturizes. If I want to indulge in a body scrub, I mix brown sugar and coconut oil – then add a scent if I feel like it. I tried ground coffee and vanilla recently…I really wanted to eat it rather than use it as a scrub. It smelled wonderful!

Kelly, ……Oops, please remove my linky #10 because I’ll post here.
For deoderant, I use coconut oil mixed with baking soda to form a very thick paste when the oil is warm enough to be liquid. I pack it into a small jar. I found that during the summer, it stayed a paste and I wet the tip of my finger and rub it on. It works whether I’ve shaved or not. I too found that it worked a day after I put it on….I was still protected.
Cheeseslave, I too had a HORRIBLE time trying the baking soda no-poo, but I read a suggestion that made me try again. I stirred 1 T. BSoda in half a glass of BOILING water and stirred very well, then when I got to the shower, I added cold water and somehow this was totally different for my hair. I stopped the vinegar rinse too. I think I have rather hard well water and now I’m completely happy with no-poo. Boiling water was the key for me. -Judy

I love to use honey and yogurt masks for your face! It drips a little so do this while taking a nice bath ; )
I like to use old Avocado as a hair conditioner. OMG! your hair is so nice. Just mash it up and mush it in! Better than any salon treatment they can think of. If you have frizzy hair add a little bit of coconut oil to it, and your frizz will be tamed.
I second the baking soda as a face scrub. The best ever! For a toner mix equal parts peroxide and apple cider vinegar. Only if you have oily skin, as I do. Vinegar should be good for normal skin.
If you have build up on your scalp try scrubbing it with brow sugar. This makes my scalp feel so nice. I add rosemary and lavender oil to it. These are the best for hair.
I like products by The Vital Image when it comes to creams, and eye gel. They are steep so I use them sparingly, but they are awesome!

You girls are AMAZING! I have just recently been turned on to the idea of all of the types of things you talk about here. I think I am much older than all of you, and wish that I had known these things when I was your age. The deception of all of the mass marketed products whether food, skin/body care, or pharmaceuticals is beyond my comprehension. I don’t have a blog or website, just wanted you to know that I am very interested in what you have to say and also very impressed! I am so new to all of this, but would like to learn. Don’t really know much about blogs, but I may have to step out there and give it a try. May need some help along the way. Thank you for all of your info.
Kelly 03.18.09 at 11:39 pm
Peggy, we all probably wish we had known this stuff when we were younger. There’s a couple high school girls who comment here now and then and I always tell them how GREAT it is that they’re catching on to all this EARLY!
I’ve been having a blast reading everyone’s links and comments. I’ve got a few new items on my list for the store, too!
Thanks, everyone!

I shared a link to the Passionate Homemaking blogs Homemade Shampoo recipe. My husband uses it as shave cream too! He has to rub it between both hands to get a lather, then slathers it on his face.

For soap: Dr Bronner’s is the best. The ingredients are superb, and the quality is second to none. Invest in the gallon size, and the price gets very reasonable–especially if you buy from a co-op. For branded good skin care products of any sort: keep an eye on your local salvage grocery place. I’m in the Bay area, where we have Grocery Outlet. They’ve had a lot of JASON personal care products lately, and I found good butter (Anchor brand) there yesterday, so I am going back this afternoon to stock up!
