- This post idea came from a new favorite blogger (she writes about topics unrelated to health or nutrition), and the only problem is that I came across her site at about 11:30 the other night, and I still had to post for the next day…3 hours later I went to bed. She’s one of those gifted writers who really pull you in. (Unlike myself, who has to rely on finding good content to keep people coming back!) The other thing I love about her writing: she’s REAL. I can’t stand when someone is fake or is full of fluff, life is too short for that bull, I want the real deal. So she does this thing called “7 quick takes” and has invited others to do the same: I’ll ramble about 7 different unrelated thoughts, all topics that may not be enough by itself for a whole post, and hope I don’t put anyone to sleep…
- I’ve mentioned this on my Tweets before, but I need to share a big frustration in my life. It often hits me when overhearing others talk about food: MOST people seem to care ONLY about the taste & the cost of food. The issue of how much nutrition they are getting in each bite, or how well they are nourishing their families, rarely makes a mention. Here comes that little voice inside my head… “Do you remember how that describes YOU just a few short years ago, Kel?”
- I’m making my first attempt at sprouting grains to make super nutritious flour, (more about this in upcoming posts – be sure to subscribe with the buttons at the upper right, so you don’t miss any riveting reading on this hot topic…you know how exciting grains are) and I’ve decided that the biggest source of annoyance is having the grains sitting around my kitchen for 1-4 days while I keep them damp. They’ve got to be damp but not wet, or so they tell me. More on that soon… UPDATE: here’s the post on sprouting grains.
- What to make for supper? The never ending question each day of the week. If I’d just plan my meals ahead like I used to, I’d avoid this dilemma, but I just haven’t made the time to do it for a while. More on that in these meal planning/kitchen tips posts. I love the moment when it hits you – I’ve got it: I’ll make chicken tortilla soup. I’ll get the cheese, chicken, chicken stock, & frozen tomatoes from the freezer, and I can throw it all together about 45 minutes before Kent is due home. Done. Check that off the palmer.
- I wasn’t sure how easily 7 random thoughts would come to me…big surprise, coming up with something to say isn’t difficult for me to do!
- Guess what I did today? I pulled into a fast food place. Arbys to be exact. I really had a craving for one of their “market sandwiches”, made with that bread that is to die for. I haven’t had one in at least a couple years. I’m happy to say I BEAT THE TEMPTATION! I looked at the price, $5.29 for ONE sandwich, and started thinking about the trans fats and high fructose corn syrup that is most likely in the bread, and the turkey that I’ll bet is full of preservatives, and on and on. I said into the little speaker thingy, “Thanks anyway!” and pulled off. Yahooooo! Came home and ate leftovers. Whatever…at least I didn’t do anything stupid, and I was full.
- Read about this big ol’ chicken scam. One more reason that I’m thankful we get our meat locally or from a place I trust where I know the people there and know how their animals are raised.
I’ll hope you’ll let me know: do you like this type of post, or is it irritating for me to jump around so much? I really don’t care either way, so don’t be afraid to be honest, my feelings aren’t hurt easily. Bring it on.

Kelly,
This is how my mind works so it works for me, lol! My brain is a scary place to be but when I’m out of my mind it’s worse
. [weird humor]
#3: I’m finding that with the sourdough that I’ve been struggling with the past few weeks. I don’t have much counter space so I shuffle it here and there but it’s always in the way.
#6: Well… I wasn’t that strong the other day. It took 2 hours longer than I expected to get dh a b-day gift so I gave in and got a burger meal (yes, with the coke – I know, I know!) at a What-A-Burger. I meant to go to Chic-Fil-A that uses peanut oil, no trans fats; then I considered Subway, no trans fats. Why the burger meal? Price, hands-down. For me and 3 dc it was just a matter of price (and hunger). Well, all of this rambling to say I felt HORRIBLE that evening. Achy all over deep inside the muscles, swollen all over, etc. It felt like a fibro flare-up only it was plain toxicity, I think. My body said, “Ack! What did you put in me? Get it out!” It really hit me (literally!) how far I’ve come in my eating habits. I use to eat like that several times a week. Who knows how much that contributed to my illness, then I’d feel bad and eat like that again for “energy” and so the circle went. I’m so glad to be out of that. Hopefully I’ll remember how bad I felt next time I’m in a pickle and just deal with hunger pangs until I get home. Way to go Kelly!

I like this new format as a way to quickly consider the many food and nutrition concerns/questions we deal with each day. Plus, it’s a great way to add variety to the blog.
BTW, I skipped a fast food temptation the other day, too! I really, really, really wanted a bean burrito and Diet Pepsi from Taco Bell. It felt good to make a better choice instead of giving in to impulse.

#2 – it’s so funny, I actually do think that sprouting grains and making bread sounds fascinating and exciting!
Can’t wait to hear how it goes.

#3 – My favorite way to sprout grains is in a hemp sprout bag. It’s made of hemp, of course, and has a drawstring closure. It’s easy to keep the sprouts damp without being too wet because the bag absorbs much of the moisture. To rinse grains you don’t have to remove them from the bag, just hold the bag in the water, shake the excess moisture off, and hang up again. For me, it has been worth the cost of the bag. You can hang the bag somewhere out of the way. They generally cost $9.00or so.

Beth, I almost wish I DID feel crappy after eating junk, but when I used to eat fast food, it rarely affected me.
Son, you reminded me, I want to go to Q’doba sometime soon, I consider that a “better” fast food. I wish we had a Chipotle!
Jenn, I’ve got sprouts, yippee!!
Hi Naomi, where do you get the hemp sprout bag??? That sounds easier than all I had going in my kitchen the last couple days. I wonder if our local coffee shop/kitchen gadget store would have it?
Thanks everyone!

Just a little note. My husband was just learning to brew his own beer when he found out about his Celiac disease. Guess what. No more home brewing. Fortunately there are some companies that have developed sorghum beer now. Which brings me to the point of my post. When starting to sprout grains at home, do research to make sure the grains are safe first.
I don’t remember the details, but I remember when my husband was researching the idea of malting sorghum to brew his own gluten free beer, he found out that sorghum very easily turns into some sort of poison while sprouting, so it should always be done in a controlled environment.
Just wanted to pass that on.

Hi Mary,
Hmmmm, I wonder if that is just with sorghum though? I’ve never heard anything about wheat berries (or spelt, etc.) being dangerous. I did a quick google search, and only found something about sorghum and “pearl millet” possibly being dangerous – but it was a very quick search and I didn’t have time to get far.
If anyone else has some scoop on that, let us know!
Thanks,
Kelly

Hi Candace Jean (Or is it “Candy” like I saw at your site?),
I can’t wait to find out, what is your definition of a “functional foodie”?!
