When Crystal gave me this recipe I was skeptical. The ingredients sounded too funky for it to turn out good, but I was feeling brave and hopeful. I’m glad I gave it a shot, it tastes like a rich chocolate pudding…well, just like a chocolate mousse, only this one is fairly healthy, especially with the avocados! (My teenager didn’t like it, but the other kids and I loved it!)
Crystal’s Chocolate Mousse
- 1/2 c. pitted, soft dates
- 3-4 T. maple syrup (I did more like 6-7 T. until the taste was how I wanted it)
- 1 T. coconut oil
- 1 1/2 T. vanilla (I did more like 1 t.)
- 2 1/2 c. mashed avocado (about 3 large)
- 3/4 c. carob powder
- 4-6 T. cocoa powder (I didn’t have carob powder and used all cocoa powder, also Crystal says she doesn’t like the after taste of the carob so she uses less of that and more of the cocoa, too.)
Soak the dates in warm water for 20 minutes. Drain the water and blend together with the rest of the ingredients in a food processor until smooth. (Add carob/cocoa last.) This keeps for several days in the fridge. Crystal spoons a little over fresh fruit, or suggested that it would make a great healthy frosting. The kids and I just ate spoonful after spoonful of it plain. It is so creamy and full of my beloved chocolate! Makes a big soup bowl full.

The first thing I though of was “chocolate guacamole”…… hmmmmmm. I’d have to be brave too. I’m glad you posted the testimonial. I might have never tried it otherwise. Perhaps I’ll try it the next time I’ve got ripe avacados.
Oh – I can’t stand the taste of carob. Nasty stuff. My mom made me eat carob peaunts and carob raisins as a kid (during the 80’s health nut craze). I was SO RELIEVED to read the chapter on chocolate in “Real Food”. I now enjoy my dark chocolate guilt-free! No more choking down carob anymore.
(no offense to those who like it…. I just personally don’t.)

Shauna,
I don’t know much about carob powder – is it really healthier than cocoa powder? Seems that there wouldn’t be much difference and that the main thing would be what sweeteners (or how much) are used with it…? (I use the organic cocoa powder.)
I bought a bag of carob chips once and have to agree with you, I couldn’t do it. Probably a lot of that has to do with my taste buds being used to and expecting something like chocolate chips, though.
I wish I could like dark chocolate more, but I just love my milk chocolate. What kind do you buy?

I just get an assortment of dark chocolate from Horrock’s. They’ve got several European brands and many that are 60% or more dark chocolate.
I think that carob is a legume – someone correct me if I’m wrong….. which explains why its yucky as a chocolate substitute. I do believe, that it does have some health benefits….. I just don’t care for it. Tastes like cardboard to me, unless it’s loaded with sugar….. and then I think “what’s the point – just give me the real chocolate!”.

Shauna,
The last time I tried dark chocolate it was 92% I think (suggested in one of the first comments in my “Dark Secrets” post), and I couldn’t do it. Maybe if I tried 60% or so I might like it…no Horrock’s near me, so I’ll have to keep my eyes open.
Thanks,
Kelly
