Hi Krista,

Your comment is a good reminder that each baby is different and as Moms we need to "tweak" things with each baby and meet their needs in the way that works best.

Thanks!
Kelly

With all due respect, I raised two babies the "on demand" way, and a third with more of a schedule. In my experience (which is my experience only and not scientifically substantiated), the first two had more issues with illness and fussiness than the third. I attribute that to really having a better handle on what the baby's needs were by lovingly and wisely implementing a feeding schedule. By doing that, I learned very quickly when she was truly hungry, and when she had other needs. I was freed to truly enjoy her as a little person. I would recommend having a gentle structure (because babies feel secure with boundaries, too).

Krista

I have to admit I was a little appalled when I first read this, then I calmed down after reading Kelly's comments, many of which I agree with. Many of the viewpoints Madia presented seem outdated - and I don't mean not trendy, but not backed up by research. In particular, newborn babies have little little tummies that don't stretch like adult tummies. They are NOT designed to be on a schedule. God's design is perfect. Babies need to be nursed on demand. This benefits both babies and mamas. It facilitates bonding, and lets baby know that his or her needs will be met, that he is loved and his world is secure. As far as nursing on demand and getting enough sleep, do what's natural - sleep with your baby. Some parents simply put their mattress down on the floor for a few months so there are no concerns about falling out of bed or rolling over on baby. Also, drooling does not indicate a baby is ready to digest more than breastmilk. As babies get older, the composition of breastmilk changes to support their current nutritional needs. Go with what seems right to you. Does it seem right to make a baby eat solids when they're not interested? Be encouraged that you are doing the right thing if you pray, listen to God, and listen to your gut instinct.
