This U.S. News story about how some supermarkets are now using a rating system to help shoppers know which food choices are healthier, sounds good in theory. But the problem is, the foods are rated for how healthy they are according to whom? The article says skim milk gets 3 stars, but whole milk gets zero – what a bunch of nonsense! Skim milk with its oxidized cholesterol from the powdered milk added back in to give it the consistency that is lost when the fat is removed, is deemed healthier than the whole milk with healthy dairy fat the way God made it?! (Read more here about healthy milk choices.)

Don’t be duped by everything these rating systems might lead you to believe, as they’re apparently just following along with some of the ‘politically correct’ rhetoric that has been floating around for too long now.

I totally agree. This sort of ranking system has been in place in the UK for a few years and it appears to “cynical types” (like me) that it is also being used to promote the *sales* of certain “featured” products, especially higher profit margin items. That means it can be heavily skewed not towards fresh, unprocessed whole foods, but, you guessed it – processed foods that meet those “questionable” standards! Can we all shout “arrrrgghhhh!” now?
