Recent Health & Nutrition News

February 24, 2008 · 0 comments

My husband, Kent, had a good idea: he suggested I post and comment on recent health & nutrition news stories on my blog. I’ll update now and then, no promises as to how often!

  • 3/10/08: Feel like having something else to worry about? Here’s an article from the Associated Press on what they’re now finding in drinking water. All the more reason to drink filtered water. The antibiotics part of it is extra scary to me right now, because I just got an e-mail asking for prayers for a man who may have cancer and also has a raging infection that antibiotics aren’t touching. The problem of resistance to antibiotics seems to be growing. I never use anti-bacterial soap anymore and for years have avoided meat and dairy that may have traces of antibiotics in them.
  • 3/8/08: Don’t do it! This article talks about the USDA food pyramid for pregnant & nursing moms. The guidelines urge expectant moms to eat vegetables and fruits, good so far, but among other things they also encourage non-fat dairy and to avoid butter!!! Wise Traditions (the quarterly publication from the Weston A. Price foundation) calls it, “Death Diet for Pregnant Women” and a “Genocidal plan”. They insist it will result in “more low birth weight babies, more birth defects, more miscarriages, more health problems, more behavior disorders, more learning problems and more suffering for both children and parents than ever before.”
  • 3/3/08: Newsmax reports that the FDA finally admits link between vaccines and autism. It’s about time they took responsibility!
  • 2/29/08: This topic is a hot one that I plan to do a full post on eventually, but for now here’s something to chew on from Newsmax about vaccine safety. Be very very careful about deciding to fully vaccinate your kids with every “recommended” shot out there.
  • 2/25/08: OK, I said I didn’t know how often I’d update, and now I’m updating just a few hours later. But I woke up this morning to a news story from the LA Times talking about the recent recall of meat from the largest school lunch supplier, and had to comment. This is yet another reason to avoid school lunches, we just have no idea where the meat even comes from or what is done to it, and this story proves that sometimes that can be pretty risky. Mercola’s comment about this story: “wonderful…but it’s 2 years too late.”
  • 2/24/08: This USA Today article about exercise benefits makes me even more thankful I took that run this afternoon! (Never mind the pain in the morning…)
  • 2/24/08: Big surprise: USA Today reports more issues with drug companies. I’m not totally against all medicine; there are times it’s needed. However, I think meds are often overused and side effects can be a big problem. It’s scary how many times you find out later that a medicine turned out to be dangerous and shouldn’t have been taken. Be sure to follow your doctor’s instructions, but you might also just want to find out what some of your other options are. I’m learning more and more about how effective some natural remedies can be. If you have a health issue, try doing a Google search with the name of whatever your issue is, along with the words “natural cure“, and you may find some interesting reading. It goes without saying to use common sense when reading, and again, be sure to follow your doctor’s instructions, but it never hurts to take in the whole big picture and find out all your options.
